THOR: RAGNAROK Actor Sam Neill Hilariously Confesses To Being Totally Baffled Shooting His Role As "Odin"

Sam Neill had a small, yet extremely memorable role in Thor: Ragnarok as an Asgardian actor playing Odin, but the Jurassic Park icon has now admitted to being thoroughly confused by his scenes!

Thor: Ragnarok turned the God of Thunder's franchise on its head, and Taika Waititi's vision for the character was one that fans embraced (saving Thor from becoming little more than a supporting character akin to The Hulk). Excitement for Thor: Love and Thunder is high, and Sam Neill recently confirmed that he will likely be part of that film as well.

As you might recall, the Jurassic Park star played an Asgardian actor who was portraying Odin in a play that was being put on for the All-Father's amusement. However, as we learned at the end of Thor: The Dark World, it was actually Loki who had disguised himself as the ruler of Asgard.

It's a little confusing...particularly if you're Sam Neill.

"I’m not really entirely nerdishly [into] the Marvel franchise. I was completely baffled by so many things," he confessed in an interview with Collider"I went with friends who sort of knew a bit more than me. I was like, ’Do you know what planet we’re on at the moment? Is that Hopkins or was that Loki?’ And they were explaining it, they said, ‘You’re in the film! Why do we have to explain it to you?’ I said, ‘Because I’m a bit lost. I’m truly lost here.’ I shouldn’t really confess to that. I should really know what’s going on. [Laughs] It is a strange - it looks like Tony Hopkins, but it’s not!"

No one can really blame Neill for struggling to keep up, especially if he's not overly familiar with everything that's going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There's no word on who he will play in Thor: Love and Thunder, but as he recently explained, his involvement with the sequel which stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Christian Bale, will depend on travel restriction caused by COVID.

I'm guessing he got the role due to his previous work with the director, because I don't see how he would have passed an audition when he didn't know jack squat about any of the characters, nor what was going on in the one scene he would have been auditioning for.

Good for Samuel. It was a pleasant surprise to see him in the play.

@Waddles - I haven't seen the film that Sam worked with the director on yet "Search for the Wilderpeople", but I understand it's funny.

@LSHF - "when he didn't know jack squat about any of the characters"

Well I mean, the director worked with that so...

@Whaley87 - Between Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Boy and JoJo Rabbit, it's safe to say NO ONE captures the absolute spectrum of what it is to be a kid like Taika. Wilderpeople is outstanding.

Yeah Sam Neil doesnt strike me as a guy who follows the MCU films, but that's okay the guys an all star. I still remember being freaked out by Event Horizon as a kid.

Not a big deal that he isn't a fan but it's pretty cool that he actually took some initiative to figure it out.

Sam Niell was great in Ivanhoe :)

Got to love his twitter "feud" with Sweden every year around New Year.

2019:

2020:

2021:

Think this is is the tweet that started it in 2015:

"The Swedes, bless 'em, prove again, while amongst the most rational of people, once a year they ARE crazy - all watching Ivanhoe [1982]"

https://mobile.twitter.com/TwoPaddocks/status/550727606299934720

And yes... Since 1988, Ivanhoe is on TV every single year at new years day in Sweden. Because.. why not..? 😁
