THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi Doesn't See Himself Directing a STAR WARS Movie

Director Taika Waititi has been praised for his work on Thor: Ragnarok, and some fans think he could make a great Star Wars movie. However, Waititi says he wouldn't be a good fit in a galaxy far, far away.

The early reviews for Thor: Ragnarok have been overwhelmingly positive, as the film sits at a stellar 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many of the reviews have praised director Taika Waititi for his fresh take on the god of thunder.

With Waititi getting such high praise, many have wondered what project he might take on next. The New Zealand-born director is rumored to be staying in the sci-fi genre by adapting the classic anime movie Akira for Warner Bros, but like many buzzworthy directors, he has become a popular fan choice to helm a Star Wars movie in the near future. However, any fans that hope Waititi might bring his unique style of storytelling to the Star Wars universe might be disappointed by the director’s comments in a recent interview.

Waititi has previously joked on Twitter about how Lucasfilm frequently fires its directors, and elaborated on these comments in an interview with The New York Times Magazine: “That particular franchise seems really hard...There’s not much room for someone like me.” Waititi was reportedly given a lot of creative freedom with Thor: Ragnarok, and has praised the work environment of Marvel Studios:

"They want new voices and different ways of telling stories...All the work to do with actors, all the rescripting stuff in the moment — that’s what I want to do, really. I’m always going to leave the CG stuff up to someone else."

The improvisational style that Waititi is known for is similar to the directorial style of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Of course, one of the reasons Lord and Miller left Solo: A Star Wars Story was because they wouldn't stick to the film's script.
Do you think Waititi's style could work in a Star Wars movie? Let us know in the comments.

Bring on Akira! (but DO NOT MAKE IT A COMEDY FTLOG!)

@ODanil -
I cannot see him doing Akira without making it a comedy - it's his 'style'.

Every movie he has ever directed has been a comedy - i cannot see him changing that. Especially with his Kaneda & Tesuo gag at the end of the video he made responding to IGN comments.

I think he could do a spin-off movie, but only if they let him make it the way he wants, don't interfere too much.
He is a good director and Ragnarok was amazing (it's already in theatres in Europe)

I like his movies, but he definitely wouldn't be a good choice for SW. Honestly, I'm not sure if he was a good choice for Thor either...

@TheDayman - Yeah. Honestly people seem like they are just saying at least it's funny. It really just sounds like exactly what I thought it was. The exact same formula we got in the other Thor movies but with a Guardians style setting to it and Hulk thrown in. Also less cringy humor.

@Origame - I feel the same way. I really like Taika's other movies, but I'm not sure if his style fits with the direction that they should be taking Thor.

@TheDayman - Yeah and getting an independent director seems like a move to make it seem like everything's deeper than it really is.

@Origame - Agreed. From the trailers it looks like another Guardians-style movie, though the reviews are surprisingly good.

@TheDayman - It says 98% on Rotten Tomatoes but the average score isn't that great and people tend to say it's ok.

@Origame - Well, its average score is almost as high as the Avengers, and higher than the first Iron Man. I'm sure the percentage is going to go down when more reviews come in, but so far people seem to really like it. Though it looks like the main compliment towards it is that it's funny, which isn't really what a Ragnarok movie should be about.

I can't imagine they'd let him be him if they wouldn't let Lord and Miller their thing.

Taika, like Wes Anderson, is a great director that I do not want anywhere near existing properties that I care about.
Hopefully he just keeps making great but original movies.

Taika, Kathleen kennedy wont give you any freedom, so dont do it, as the director of the first and rn, the only unique marvel movie, continue doing great things with thor, or akira, or original stories, dont go near the star wars shit, they need a yes man who will do nothing to amplify the script.
