Marvel have just posted a new interview with Hiddleston. In it he discusses Loki's motivations and which comic incarnation they looked to when brining him to the big screen. A lot of it is stuff we have heard in previous interviews, but we do get a glimpse into some of the influences Hiddleston looked to when getting into character.

“Interestingly enough, he(Branagh) said to look at Peter O’Toole in two specific films, ‘The Lion in Winter’ and ‘Lawrence of Arabia. What’s interesting about ‘The Lion in Winter’ is, [O’Toole] plays Prince Henry, and what’s beautiful about his performance is you see how damaged he is. There’s a rawness [to his performance], it’s almost as if he’s living with a layer of skin peeled away. He’s grandiose and teary and, in a moment, by turns hilarious and then terrifying. What we wanted was that emotional volatility. It’s a different acting style, it’s not quite the same thing, but it’s fascinating to go back and watch an actor as great as O’Toole head for those great high hills.”

Apparently Hiddleston used his study of O'Toole throughout the entire Thor shoot. As well as giving Branagh some takes influenced by some other names you might recognize..

“On set, we used to do different takes of different scenes, and we’d have [four] different versions. The first one, he always said you can have one for free. The second take would be the Peter O’Toole take. The third one would be the Clint Eastwood take. And the fourth take would be the Jack Nicholson. So I had these three great actors I was trying to pull stuff from.

“[Branagh] used to love the Clint, actually. It was between the Clint and the Jack, because the Clint would be like, whatever you’re feeling, put it away in a drawer somewhere at the bottom of you and throw away the key. And Jack would be, have a really good time! A relish, a deep sense of enjoyment, he was really enjoying himself.”

Well, it will certainly be interesting to see which of these influences stuck and was used by Branagh in the final edit. Hiddleston's Loki has been fairly absent from any promotion of trailers for Thor so far so hopefully we get a better look at him in action soon.

Great find ROR! I love the fact that Branagh is directing this more & more, as I was very skeptical when he was announced. I was told he made the simplest scenes feel epic. I know the diagonal camera angles back that up. I can't wait for the second THOR trailer to hit, with finalized CG effects.

I'm sort of glad they haven't promoted Loki that much, as I want him to be like a surprise villain to general audiences. If they show any more of Loki, it'd be like the whole movie in the trailer.

Cool cool cool. The fact that he looks to Peter O'Toole for inspiration is awesome. Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite films of all time.

I've not heard of this style either (emulating other actors to this degree). It will definitely interesting to see how it works out. Kenneth Branaugh is the fricking man.

Seriously tho, why is it that Brits are the best directors and actors? Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Ian McKellen, Alan Rickman, Christopher Lee, Michael Gambon, and of course Patrick Stewart. It's not fair :(

They need to make a Loki focused 2nd trailer.

they shouldn't promote loki as villain this movie's meant to be his journey to becoming a villain, it should unfold on screen, and they shouldn't reveal his real heritage what so ever in the trailers or in promotion, as comic book readers we'll know it but keeping it wrapped up would surprise some of the general audience

Tom Hiddleston clearly is a superb actor, if you look at that bottom pic of Loki you really can see tradgedy in his face.
This guy will be the emotional center of the film I hope 'cos Loki's journey is quite sad & tragic.

Plus he's obviously a better actor than Hemsworth look at all the stage experience he's had

Check out this scene from Lion in the winter. If Loki can come off with even a splinter of the complexity and emotion Peter O'toole could command we are in for a golden age of CBM's.

A lot of people here in Australia are gonna be super skeptical of this one, only because of Hemsworth, who was an actor in one of our soaps.

I think that the guy so far in all the footage we've seen has been beyond awesome, we all saw him Star Trek and 5 minutes of screen time he had in that he was very good, and I liked him in A Perfect Getaway, he played the right amount of menace in that film to make him look creepy.

The guy has my vote.

@ yeoldeemoney

i'm no expert in acting, but it seems to me that there are two very different schools of thought for actor training on both sides of the pond.

I read another forum on here where it was mentioned that for years English actors were used for the villain roles in many of the action films of the 80's and 90's, and these were probably the most memorable and iconic, i think with comic book films being the newkind of action flick there is some recognition of this, and have not only cast these english actors as bad guys, but see the worth of using them as heroes.

@Marvel72 This truly is an amazing year for CBM villains. Three amazing actors playing 3 awesome villains (though it's really 2 villains, since Sinestro isn't evil yet in GL)? Awesome.

yeoldeemoney - 2/9/2011, 12:20 PM
@australian yeah i can see that. i just think that English actors are better character actors than American actors. For instance, how many Brits can pull of a perfect American accent? Almost all of them. How many Americans can pull off a British accent? Almost none of them. American actors, to me, are too concerned with bringing themselves into the role instead of allowing the role to take control of them. I.e. Tom Cruise is pretty much Tom Cruise as a [character] instead of Tom Cruise is a [character].
