From Videogames to the Big Screen: Thundercats are coming!

It is – without a doubt – a great time to be a nerd in this world. All of our 80’s favorite cartoons are making their way to the big screen, and Thundercats is no different. The 80’s classic cartoon series with the plotline “A team of humanoid cats fight evil in their adopted home world” has now got itself a director for the move to the flicks.

But it ain’t any director you’ve ever heard of before, considering it will be Jerry O'Flaherty’s big screen debut.

O'Flaherty is actually making the leap from art director on such games as Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3 and the Command and Conquer series of games from Westwood; and considering the cut-scenes in the latest Command and Conquer game, he’s already got props from my corner.

"It feels like a natural thing for me to step into," he said. "Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience."

And with a heritage of nerd-dom behind him, it definitely seems like a natural move for O'Flaherty to head over to making Thundercats a reality on the big screen.

O'Flaherty plans to remain loyal to the original concept of the humanoid cats fleeing Thundera, ending up on Third Earth and having to fight Mumm-Ra. The series – which was also a line of toys and comics from Marvel – will likely be in good hands!
