With a worldwide gross in excess of $700 million, director
Michael Bay's Transformers was a natural for a sequel. Despite this and other box office successes (
Armageddon,
Pearl Harbor), however, Bay often gets a bad rap from critics who dismiss his films as trifling "popcorn films" and from
disgruntled extras who claim he is a tyrant on set.
Bay
explained his on-set behavior in an LA Times interview saying:
"My movies are a big canvas. A lot of stuff can go wrong. I also do a lot of dangerous stuff so we take things seriously. You have to run a real well-oiled machine."
In an interview with
Wizard magazine,
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star
Shia La Beouf defended his new film and Bay's particular style of filmmaking:
"The movie is (Bay's) best film. He's getting better as he goes. He is attempting to do different things. He sticks with the same formula, it's proven. He's not the only one to do that. The most important thing a director can do is establish a style. Michael Bay has a definite style."
La Beouf called Bay's films "escapism" and boasted:
"I don't know of anybody that shoots action like Michael Bay. Nobody shoots women like Michael Bay. He is shameless about it. And the world wants that. Middle America wants the shameless, exploitive, escapism film. That's what they want. They want big, bad, sexy and fast."
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters June 24th!
