Shia La Beouf Defends Michael Bay

The star of TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN calls it Bay's best film.

With a worldwide gross in excess of $700 million, director Michael Bay's Transformers was a natural for a sequel. Despite this and other box office successes (Armageddon, Pearl Harbor), however, Bay often gets a bad rap from critics who dismiss his films as trifling "popcorn films" and from disgruntled extras who claim he is a tyrant on set.

Bay explained his on-set behavior in an LA Times interview saying:

"My movies are a big canvas. A lot of stuff can go wrong. I also do a lot of dangerous stuff so we take things seriously. You have to run a real well-oiled machine."

In an interview with Wizard magazine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Shia La Beouf defended his new film and Bay's particular style of filmmaking:

"The movie is (Bay's) best film. He's getting better as he goes. He is attempting to do different things. He sticks with the same formula, it's proven. He's not the only one to do that. The most important thing a director can do is establish a style. Michael Bay has a definite style."

La Beouf called Bay's films "escapism" and boasted:

"I don't know of anybody that shoots action like Michael Bay. Nobody shoots women like Michael Bay. He is shameless about it. And the world wants that. Middle America wants the shameless, exploitive, escapism film. That's what they want. They want big, bad, sexy and fast."

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters June 24th!

Saying something is Michael Bay's best movie isn't saying much.

I think for those first douchebags, the site wizards should automatically delete their post, even if they have something undouchebaggy to say. Generally they don't. Nice pick by the way, on the meat. Love them breasts, rump roast and steak.

If I was Shia, or anyone in Bay's camp, I'd be doing the same for him...I can guarantee that not a single one of his critics who bitch on and on about his "explosive" style could anything half as good as Bay does it....right on...good post!

@Maximus: I can tell you that the Fallen is an Acolyte of Unicron, so his coming to me signals part 3 will have Unicron. Sweet huh.
ThunderCougarFalconBird
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/5/2009, 5:24 AM
TheMyth - We could have Unicron at the end of this movie. The Fallen could be turned good and then he could fly into some big cloud (unicron). That could work so well I think from now on all the main villains in comic movies should be seen in cloud form! Oh...wait...yeah...

How about making all villains scarred remote controlled mutes with swords coming out of their arms?
Oh...wait...yeah...

How about having all villains show up 10mins before the end credits after 2hrs of zero character development and then die completely rulling out a second movie?
Oh...wait...yeah...

haha, so basically Labouf has defended Bay by stating that yes, his movies are shit, but thats what middle America is looking for!

Something critics and such sometimes ignore is what I call the "fun factor".
Transformers wasn't incredibly intellectual or anything but it just a real blast to watch. I mean it was a lot of FUN.
People have this attitude that if it doesn't deal with some heady topic or serious issue, or feature some unique take on the human condition, or some kind of cheesy love story, then a movie is just no good.
I think that attitude is excluding the fun factor. There is nothing wrong with a movie being mere entertainment. That's half of what movies exist for int he first place.

"He is attempting to do different things. He sticks with the same formula, it's proven"

Sounds very different!!

This film is gonna be fantastic anyway!!

Rorscach1, i dont think that shia ever once said that Bays movies are shit. He explained how and why bays movies are great, and claimed that his movies are what middle america want, and thats pretty true for the most part. I dont think thats what he said at all.
ThunderCougarFalconBird
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/5/2009, 7:06 AM
thenumber12 - Shia says "He sticks with the same formula, it's proven". Bays formular has proven to be shit, thus Shia has said "He makes shit". Don't get me wrong Transformers was awesome! But it stands as one shining light on an otherwise gloomy CV for Bay. Shia did also say "He's getting better as he goes" which further solidifies Rorschach01s point of Shia saying "Bay makes shit". Hopefully that last quote I gave is true and Bays Transformers form is carrying on!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/5/2009, 7:27 AM
Howlett04 said it!^^^^...dont get me wrong, like most people i also thought Transformers was great but im pretty sure Mr Spielberg had a hand in some of that. Bay admitted he screened nearly everything for him before his final decision. Bays usual formula= Explosions, vomit inducing schmaltz, ear bleeding direlogue, more explosions, some pg13 t and a, more explosions, end.

loganoneil

People - remember, Mr. 'Le Beef' is IN the movie. What's he gonna' do, bad-mouth the production and say the director blows? Let's not also forget WHO we're talking about - it's Shia [FRICKIN'] La Beouf, a SURE sign of acting quality... NOT (unless you consider twitchy spastic overacting good...)!
ThunderCougarFalconBird
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/5/2009, 1:00 PM
adamant877 - Because he was that summers "it" boy. You get it all the time. There's someone you've never heard of in a film then you find he's in every film that year!

He must have gone to the audition wearing "sex panther", made with bits of real panther so you know it's good!

Too true shibazz (unless of course your name is supermike - LOL)! But let's face it, just because someone has the RIGHT to freedom of speech doesn't necessarily mean they SHOULD exercise that right, unless they have something meaningful and interesting to contribute. I'm not saying that there should be censorship, but how about exercising a little self-monitored tact and discretion? In other words, they're called 'MANNERS'...
