TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS Positive First Reactions Promise "Franchise-Best" Movie

When have we heard that before? The first social media reactions for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts rolled out late last night, and they promise a franchise-best installment...

A couple of weeks ago, we got word that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was being described as a "bit of a mess" after a round of test screenings, but the first reactions are now online, and they tell a very different story.

The franchise has always made a lot of money for Paramount Pictures, but the movies have never exactly been what you'd call critical darlings. However, 2018's Bumblebee was widely viewed as a turning point, and it seems Rise of the Beasts might just keep things on track.

Though there have been some of the usual criticisms (cheesy dialogue, simplistic story), we've yet to come across a completely negative Tweet.

Have a look at the first reactions below, along with a behind-the-scenes featurette with some new footage.

Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new breed of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

Steven Caple Jr. directs, and the sequel stars Peter Cullen, Ron Perlman, Pete Davidson, Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Tobe Nwigwe, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Liza Koshy, John DiMaggio, David Sobolov, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Cristo Fernández.

Rise of the Beasts arrives in theatres June 9, 2023.

Green Lantern had great social media reaction.

Same with Wonder Woman 1984.

I'll never forget this fact.

@CyberNigerian - first reactions have such varying and wild credibility sometimes. Its crazy when you think about some of the absolute stinkers that got great social media reactions.

@CyberNigerian - true, but the TF movies have had a certain stigma attached to them since the Bay days, so when someone says a TF movie is solid I think it's a good enough sign. I mean, Bumblebee was good.

@TheHumanSpider2 -
Indy 5 has been a dumpster fire.

Ant-Man 3 the only positive first reactions were around how realistic Jonathan Majors beating up people seemed :p

First reactions have a layer of exaggeration to them sometimes but the consistent thing I have seen in a lot of these is the movie feels like "the cartoon" and that is encouraging

@Matador - I get that Wheeljack is a tech guy, and inventor, but they don't have to give him glasses or goggles to portray it. Show him doing it. That's what the G1 shows and comics did.

@Spidey91 - i'm pissed there is not a single predacon... like wtf.
for maximals i wish they had Dinobot who was my fav and silverbolt
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 5/25/2023, 1:17 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - because they're planning to do the proper Beast Wars "prequel" afterwards, that's why they're putting them in the same movie than the more popular and marketeable Autobots. I bet that's their plan amyways.
StSteven
StSteven - 5/25/2023, 1:21 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - Weeeeelll, if you want to get technical about it, the toy packaging for Scorponok (the scorpion drones we see in the last trailer) names him "Predawn Scorponok" and even has the Pred symbol next to his name. But whether or not they're actually referred to as "Predacons" in the movie remains to be seen.

Personally I'm hoping the movie ends with the Maximals using the trans warp key to travel back to their "original" time in pre-historic Earth (yes, I know that in Beast Wars they're actually future Cybertronians that travel back in time) and we see a post credits scene that introduces the other Maximals and Predicons setting up a potential BW spin-off lave action series. Yeeess!
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 5/25/2023, 1:42 PM
@StSteven - that would be dope but is asking wayyyyyyyy too much from this movie. i think they are just hoping and praying this movie makes money like the others lol... but i'd be soooo down for that. growing up Beast Wars was literally one of my fav shows
StSteven
StSteven - 5/25/2023, 3:30 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah, probably, but they could at least hint at it in a post credits scene in case the BW aspect of this movie is really popular with the fans, otherwise they'd be pretty dumb to not at least leave the door open for a BW spin-off. But then again I don't know how this movie ends. The Maximals could just go back to the jungle and "hide" again, which would be kinda lame and wouldn't explain why we never saw them in the future movies, especially when "Unicron" is emerging in "The Last Knight". But we'll see. They're not exactly the MCU when it comes to planning and cohesion.

Yeah, I grew up on G1 and was just starting to "get out of TFs" when BW came out (I use quotes because I never actually got out of TFs - kinda like the Mafia), but my younger brother was going strong with BW so I still was aware of what was happening with them. I have all the episodes of the original BW show on disc and the BW IDW graphic novels (well, ALL the TF graphic novels to be honest). If you are a BW fan you should check them out. IDW did to series several years ago called "BW: The Gathering" and "BW: The Ascension" with FANTASTIC writing and art (the writer Simon Furman was one of the original "TF:UK" writers back in the '80s), and they are a 2-part story that takes place in parallel (literally) to the original BW stories, but features characters that got toys but were never in the show, and they are in the same time and place as the show, BUT they are chronologically displaced so that the OG characters never know that they are there or interact with them.

Then just recently IDW did another BW series (vols 1 - 3) before they lost the TF license and had to cut it short. The writing is pretty good but the art is... not for everyone. VERY stylized, but I enjoyed it. In this series it's the OG cast and starts on Cybertron and retells some of the OG show stories but in new ways and from different perspectives while diving deeper into those stories. Like the Vok (remember them with the floating mountain?) play a much larger role in this. Also the recent "War for Cybertron" Netflix animated series had the BW characters side by side with the G1 characters for the third part, "Kingdom".

Finally, if you were a fan of the BW toys, Hasbro has been making updated versions of the more popular and releasing them starting with their "War for Cybertron: Kingdom" line and continuing up through their current "Legacy: Evolution" line. But if you prefer the OG BW toys, Walmart has been releasing reissues of the original figures in the original Kenner packaging and everything. They don't currently have any in the stores that I've seen recently, but you can get them on their website (and some are actually cheaper now than there were in the store).

So that's about the BW goodness that I can think of off the top of my head to share with a fellow BW fan. As you can probably tell, I'm a HUGE TF fan in general (I've got an entire spare bedroom with thousands of mostly still MIBS), so I'm a pretty good source for all things TF-related so feel free to hit me up if you have any questions or just want to talk TF stuff 😊.

@StSteven - damn haha

i literally had every single BW toy that they made. i kept them under my bed or in the closet so they wouldnt get "hurt" Not a clue where they are now, doubt my mom saved them, prob sold them at a yard sale for like $2 each or some shit.... but, knowing Walmart is reselling the originals i may have to spend money on something i dont need becuz i loved them as a kid haha

@MotherGooseUPus - Here, I'll save you a search: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=transformers%20beast%20wars%20vintage

Yeah, like I said I started collecting TFs when they first came out in (I was just coming off my Star Wars kick) '84 and that was like all I wanted for birthdays and holidays so I had like hundreds of them. Unfortunately my little brother was 6 years younger than me, so he wanted to play with them, but half the time he just broke them, which pissed me off to no end. No matter where I hid them he would find them. At one point I even had them on a shelf at the top of the closet in the room we shared and while I was at school one day he figured out how to get them by pulling himself up on the clothes in the closet and then grabbing onto the shelf and pulling it down. SMASH! I was less than thrilled when I got home. Ultimately I stored all those TFs in boxes in my parents' basement and so every time I go visit I bring a bunch back. One of these days I'll have to clean them up and get replacement decals for them (there's a website that makes them). But for now they're just in storage boxes in my TF room closet.

I got out of collecting more or less when I was in high school (as I was more into collecting girls' phone numbers) and my undergrad years (I was collecting debt instead), but then when I started my graduate studies I was a TA/RA which meant that I got my tuition covered and a monthly stipend AND I discovered the beauty of student loans, so I started collecting again in around 2006 and haven't looked back (of course the fact that when I finally graduated with my PhD I had ~$160K in student loans makes me think that that wasn't the best use of my funds at the time 🥺).

Anyhow, these days I have "disposable" income so it's not a big deal but I still try to find the deals on them and I'm don't collect ALL the different lines, like the ones aimed at little kids (unless they're a REALLY good deal). And there are also the super high end ones called "Masterpiece" that are mainly aimed at the hardcore Japanese collectors that I usually don't get (although I did get the MP Jetfire that came out recently because he was just SO damn beautiful). And any of the super expensive ones I want my wife will get me for Christmas or so, like I got the 3 foot tall Unicron a couple of years back and the auto-transforming Prime a couple of years ago. I also have some signed and numbered TF prints framed and hanging on the walls in my TF room from this British art gallery (the Moor Art Gallery) and even a TF Lite Brite that you hang on the wall that my daughter and I are working on.

So, yeah, you could say that I'm a bit of a TF freak. Not sure what I'm going to do when I start running out of room. But I told my wife that when I die I want to be buried with them. ALL of them. So she had better get me a big ass hole in the ground 😉.

Brand damage. Similar to DC or MCU - it reaches a point where the audience just does not turn up.
