The mid-season finale of The Walking Dead finally answered a few questions for us, but it gave us a few new things to ponder over the next few months until the show returns. Show producer and comic book creator Robert Kirkman sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to answer a few questions regarding certain characters, death and future plans for story and character development. Here's a portion of the interview. Be sure to check out the link for the entire article, as it contains some very intriguing insights.

THR:Sophia (Madison Lintz) was in the barn the whole time! How come Hershel never mentioned it?
Robert Kirkman: I don't think that Hershel was ever doing a cataloging of the zombies. It was painful for him because his wife and son were also in the barn. It's not like he was actually hanging out in there or paying attention to all the walkers that were in there. He knew they were looking for a girl named Sophia but who knows what zombies were are in there and how often they'd been put in there. Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) was the one who was in charge and corralling them and putting them in there. So for all Hershel knew, Otis had put the Sophia zombie in there months ago.

THR: Was killing one of the comic's original characters an easy one?
Kirkman: When a good idea comes up, you have to go with it. Sophia is a character who is still alive in the comic book series and who has contributed quite a bit to the overall narrative and informed a lot of story lines for a lot of different characters. Having Carol (Melissa McBride) survive her daughter as opposed to the other way around as it is in the comics is going to lead to interesting but different stories.

THR: Will the second half pick up immediately after the shooting or will it jump ahead?
Kirkman: We're not going to be doing any big time jumps. Whether we lose a day, hour or if it picks up the very minute after the scene, I wouldn't want to give away too early but there's not going to be any massive time jump this season.

THR: How will Sophia's death alter Carl's development?
Kirkman: One of the major story lines in the comics is Carl's (Chandler Riggs) dissention into a darker role; he's forced into adulthood to make terrible decisions. His character evolving over the course of the comic book series is really going to be accelerated by the absence of Sophia. That will remain largely in tact and be sped up. There's going to be more darkness creeping in to the series in the second half of the season. Now that the Sophia question has been answered, they're not going to have that hanging over their heads and that's not going to be bogging them down making them have to devote time to that.

THR: Rick told Shane about Lori's (Sarah Wayne Callies) pregnancy, but not that he was aware of their affair. How long will he keep that over him?
Kirkman: I want the show to get a reputation as one that doesn't hang on to things like that for long. We have a lot of story to tell on this series and we're not going to be dwelling too much. I'm very excited that we got around to revealing that Rick knew about the relationship. Stuff like that is going to bubble up to the surface in very interesting ways in the last half of the season.

THR: Any update on when/if we'll see the Governor or Michonne?
Kirkman: I can say only that we will see them eventually. We will see some new characters popping up as early as the [2012] premiere episode.

THR: Still unknown: What Jenner told Rick at the CDC. How much longer can you hold on to that?
Kirkman: It will be happening sooner rather than later.

Needless to say, there is still a lot of story and development ahead of us, with some interesting direction. I don't know about you, but I'm still very curious about what it was that Jenner whispered to Rick and whether or not The Governor will show up this season!

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on February 12, 2012.

Was getting increasingly obvious that Sophia was either a walker, or zombie chow, still a great show though

They seem to be able to kill the zombies, way too easily now. No tension, mounting fear, horror, or suspense. I don't want it to start having the feeling of a video game, and keep the audience distanced.

It has almost started to feel like.. their only REAL danger of death now, is from each other, not the friggin zombies!

I know we are following the stories of the people that survived. But the show is called the Walking Dead. Is that "just" a sly reference to the not dead yet band of survivors?

I guess I just want more horror. LOL. I know.. I am being too picky. I'll shut up.

ive come to realize that comic book fans are both spoiled and complain to much. JETS (just enjoy the show). If you want it to be exactly like the comic then dont watch it.

@Bojac

I read the comics.. have 90 issues so far.

My point is: (just a for my point) when the zombies busted out from the barn in the comics, Hershel lost some of his kids then TO the zombies. It wasn't so neat and "turkey shooting". These are horror icon killing machines, not just shambling, moaning set pieces.

Glen made my point when he even said, in the episode, "I forgot to be afraid of them." In fact, this whole first half of the season, the whole group has. Which I understand MAY be a plot point they are making.

I still LOVE the books AND the show. In the first season, someone from the group died every few episodes, keeping the tension of their situation alive. Only Otis has died in these. Well, Sophia. heh.

Anyways, yeah. Peace.

It should be mentioned that when the comics start Carl and Sophia are about 7 years old, and now they are more like their ages in the tv show. So having him develop into a character who can shoot a zombie in defense of his mother, Shane in defense of his father and even another child who has killed his twin brother (the Z apocalypse and losing both their parents messed him up but good) seems fair enough to me.

I love this show but it needs more zombies because that is the selling point of the show and if they take that away then it will fail.

@CrowPirate

If you read the comics you should be aware that the major threat of the books IS the other people. That shouldn't be a question. Yes, there are zombies around, but they've become an environmental hazard. It's been said that the kids born after the start of all this have it lucky, zombies will just be part of their lives, something they know to be wary of, but will be able to live normally apart from that. It's only their parents, coming from a world without them that TRULY fear them. And even now that fear is dwindling.
The main point of the series and the comics is NOT the zombies, they're the window dressing. It's people living in a world where zombies exist and how that changes them. The PEOPLE are the main point of this series. If you want a series where the zombies are the main attraction you have any number of comics or movies to choose from. Frankly I find it off that after 90+ issues you haven't gotten that point, there have been whole chunks without a single zombie showing up even in the background.

I have a feeling that The Governor will be Merle and his loosing a hand will be dealt to Rick or at least winked at to knowing fans before being stopped by Daryl. I truly hope they keep the baby's fate the same as the comics seeing how that truly upset people ([frick]ing really?) and I think the American viewing audience needs that since it so rarely happens, and never that brutally. The Walking Dead needs to be the show where even without zombies no one is ever really safe; whether from mans cruelty or a zombies gnashing teeth.
