THE WALKING DEAD Ratings Hit A Series Low After The Lowest Viewed Premiere In The Show's History

Could The Walking Dead be stumbling towards cancellation? Viewership for Sunday's episode was a new series low just a week after the premiere delivered half the ratings of the year before. Check it out...

Once upon a time, The Walking Dead was the biggest show on television and it often earned upwards of 20 million viewers on a weekly basis, breaking cable records and making AMC an insane amount of money. Well, those days are now long gone because this Sunday's episode of the Image Comics adaptation received only a 2.0 rating in the key demographic of adults 18 - 49 which is a huge drop.

In terms of actual viewership, the second episode of The Walking Dead's ninth season saw only 4.9 million
tune in to see what was happening after the somewhat underwhelming premiere. While many critics have argued that the show is better now than it's been for quite some time, it appears as if too many mistakes were made last year and the departure of Andrew Lincoln really can't have helped.

There's a worrying trend here too, because last week's premiere was the lowest-rated premiere in history...coming off the season eight finale which was the lowest-rated finale in The Walking Dead's history!

While these numbers are still solid for cable, a plummet in ratings like this doesn't bode well for the future and, if nothing else, AMC may very well consider cutting the budget or more actors.

Show was coasting and died shortly after season one. No episode I've seen so far has been as good as the first episode.

So much for the franchise going on forever, as someone from the show said.

You realize these numbers while down still destroyed every other show on cable or network TV that wasn’t football. So I doubt it is going anywhere.

Honestly they have killed too many beloved characters. If you kill off all the characters that are liked what are people going to tune in for? They kind of did this to themselves.

@knighted - That's not the reason. 24 did that throughout it's entire run and remained popular. 24 Legacy's cancellation doesn't count, because it wasn't Jack Bauer.

@Luminus - you are 100% wrong. Since the death of glenn and Abraham the series rating have declined, after carl it declined even more do your reasearch.

Well, the first two episodes of the new season were boring and pointless as frak, so what did they expect? They've gone aggressively meh like Iron Fist and so the show is danger of sharing the same fate.

It sucks that the ratings are low. Scott Gimple did a lot of damage with unnecessary flashbacks, killing off main characters and dragging storylines. Angela Kang has produced two decent episodes so far. They actually have me excited to see what's next after watching the first two episodes. Been a fan since day and I'm hopeful that it gets better.

This show hardly interests me anymore. I haven't started the current season, is it showing any good signs?

I signed off on this show last season and struggled to finish the season because I invested so much time. Now, however, that rick and maggie are leaving, I’m watching to find out how.

.10 less then 5 million is still a large number of viewers isn’t it? Let’s compare that show to others that night before we starting dating g the show is dead
