After 11 seasons, The Walking Dead reached its end on AMC last night. However, with a whole host of spin-offs on the way, the zombie apocalypse is far from over.

After Judith Grimes was shot by Governor Pamela Milton last week, Daryl raced into action in order to save Rick's daughter in the opening moments of the finale. Jules and Luke were among some early casualties, while Rosita, Eugene, and Gabriel also found themselves in trouble as they looked to save Coco and the rest of the kidnapped babies.

It appeared Rosita might be done for after being surrounded by walkers, but she managed to battle her way through the undead to live to fight another day...briefly. We soon discovered that she had been bitten, sealing her fate. It was a heartbreaking moment, but what of the Governor?

A war between the Alexandrians and Commonwealth ensued, though the latter group soon began turning on their leader thanks to her recent actions. When Daryl showed up to point out, "You've got one enemy: we ain't the walking dead," Pamela's army finally turned its back on her, prompting the villain to sacrifice herself to the zombie Lance.

However, Maggie didn't let her off that easily, and shoots him, ensuring she will pay for her many crimes. As for the Commonwealth, that's blown up, killing the dead inside to the tune of Living Colour's "Cult of Personality."

Elsewhere in the episode, Negan again apologises to Maggie for what he did to Glenn. While she can't forgive him, they make peace, setting the stage for the spin-off, Dead City, which will see the two characters teaming up to fight the undead.

The survivors enjoy a meal together (just like the one Carl imagined for them), and Rosita passes away after saying her goodbyes. We then jump a year into the future to see how everyone is doing, and watch as Judith receives a compass and letter from Negan. Daryl, meanwhile, bids farewell to Carol as he sets off on a new adventure (another upcoming spin-off).

Daryl vows to find Rick and Michonne, and we then find out what those two have been up to. The latter looks every bit the warrior as she continues searching for her lover, while Rick, wearing a CRM jacket, is forced to surrender to a helicopter whose pilot can be heard saying, "You've been located and are instructed to surrender. It's like he told you, there's no escape for the living."

We end with Judith and RJ admiring their peaceful surroundings, with the young girl telling her brother, "We get to start over. We're the ones who live."

With that, The Walking Dead is over, but there are several stories that are far from...

I stopped watching this 3 years ago.

Reading the description of the series "finale" makes me feel good about my decision lol

What a giant mess.

Given the spin-offs, it ended just about the only way you could expect it to. I liked that the very end was a good tribute to all of the characters from all of the seasons.

Had no idea the finale was last night. What a massive fall from grace for this show.

@Cap1 - what's the matter with you? You're really acting like a the walking dead.

Considering all the set ups for spin offs, this doesn't even sound like a series finale. It's just a regular season finale where it wants to get you asking questions that'll be answered next time.

@Origame - Right. They aren't ending this show. They are just splitting the characters up into their own shows lol.

@Origame - Its like if you had an X-Men comic, said you were ending the series, but then gave all the characters their own solo comics.

What a collapse. Less than 20 comments in this comment section. This show was THE entertainment event in Western culture ~ 7+ years ago. We all couldn't wait for Sunday night, and we would talk about Sunday night at work all week, anxious for the next Sunday night, and so forth. Geez, even Talking Dead -- on at 10 pm on a Sunday night! -- was a highly rated TV show and did better than most shows on the networks airing during more favorable time slots.

@GeneralZod - they messed up with Scott Gimple. It is a shame what happened there. But overall I enjoyed the series

Talk about oversaturation with all the spinoffs.

I legitimately didn't realize this hadn't already ended.

As other have suggested, this should have ended after season 5.

I get that the comics went on forever. That's what comics do. But for the series, they should have had the main group fight/kill the cannibals they met (the whole "I'm gonna put that axe in your head" bit from Rick), and then introduced Negan as a second-half-of-the-season antagonist. Let Negan kill Glenn and Abraham still, but ultimately have Rick kill Negan by the end of the season and let the surviving members of the group go their separate ways at the end, after realizing that staying a group makes them a target. Then, they can have whatever spin-offs they want, but the main storyline comes to a natural end and isn't drawn out another 10 seasons.

Negan shouldn't have gotten any form of a redemption, imo. Should have made him the ultimate antagonist and killed him within the season.

And if that isn't a satisfying ending, just slowly introduce the idea that the zombies are starting to rot away, and they just have to wait around to the end of winter to start over.

@SheepishOne - I was a big fan back in the day, but my god they did not realize it wasn’t a comic but a tv show. Negan was the straw that broke a lot of the camels back, but it was struggling many seasons before that.

They could’ve had a final season where they did find a cure, and essentially told the story of how does society move forward and build from there and wrapped it up while dealing with the remaining dead.

They could’ve told any story at all really. Instead it limped on telling a series of endless macabre realities that quite frankly, people just have no interest in. The real world is crappy enough to watch a show about the apocalypse with no happy end in sight.

I kept watching until the end, because I remember how good this show was the first seasons and how I praised there was a zombies TV show like this. I agree it got derailed specially after Negan's appearance, I think the main reason was that it got "too big"... to many characters and not enough room for everyone. At a point, I enjoyed FEAR TWD waaaay more, I think the stories were "smaller" but better developed. I hope the new spin offs go that way, and considering it's "reduced" to a couple of the best characters, I think they will.

I kept with this show the whole way through and don't regret it one bit as I loved it, especially during it's hey day in seasons 2 - 6 (or whatever, like I say, I enjoyed it all). I do recognize that it got repetitive and formulaic, and they really did milk it, but man it was a great ride. The cast & crew were so passionate and awesome people, it just added to it's allure for me.
Fun fact - I actually went to a watch party for the 2nd to last episode in Senoia, GA (Woodbury & Alexandria) at the restaurant owned by Greg Nicotero & Norman Reedus. Pretty cool.
Gonna miss TWD! (but will have the spin offs lol)

What am I missing about Negan? Why does everyone hate him and his story arc? I know one thing! That [frick]er had something to say...and boyyy did he say it!

Are the actors not tired playing these roles. A Rick and Michonne spinoff, a Daryl spinoff, wtf. This must be exhausting for them too.

Having watched every season of the show, I only watched the first 4 episodes of this season and then gave up because it just didn't hold my attention anymore but I came back for the finale and somehow I feel like I didn't miss much?

I still think that seasons 3 and 4 were the pinnacle of this show but there's no denying TWD has had a hell of a good run.
