Andrea critiques Shane’s methods of getting what he wants in this sneak peek from episode 209. Don’t miss the new episode on Feb 19 at 9/8c.

With the midseason premiere out of the way it's time to discuss what took place in last night's episode, "Nebraska." They picked up right from where they left off, the tragic death of Sophia. This finally put a rest to the focus of the first half of this season which was mostly about the search for Carol's lost daughter. Instead of skipping along the show grinds to a snarl once again, spending much of the first half of the show cleaning up after Shane's zombie massacre.

So, the pain of Hershel losing his family, and his faith in the world drives him to drown his sorrows in booze. His daughter collapses in the kitchen, and it is believed that she has gone into shock. Now, they need Hershel to play doctor once again, but he can't be found. With a flask as evidence that the old man is hitting the sauce. First guess is that he headed into town to go to the local bar.

But before they go on the search for Hershel, Lori has another classicly annoying scene. This time she questions Rick's logic for going after Hershel. Mind you Hershel is the only one in the group with medical training, which kind of makes him one of the most important people to have alive. Also, with Lori being pregnant, her first instinct should be to make sure she has a doctor around to deliver her bastard child.

So anyways, Rick and Glen head off to find Hershel, and he is sitting in the bar slamming down drinks like a sorority girl on Thursday nights. Once Rick has made his usual rah rah speech Hershel is ready to head back and join the group, but a new twist is introduced. Two strange men appear from out of the blue, Dave, and his fat buddy, Tony. The conversation goes from a hesitant but semi-politeful banter to something menacing, bubbling with plenty of tension. Dave, the most talkative of the strangers peppers Rick with questions regarding their local accommodations and asks he can come and stay at their farm.

Rick's instinct is that these two guys are trouble and after a heated debate that is about to head completely South, Rick shoots and kills both men. What is interesting to me is the hypocrisy of this scene. In a lot of ways Rick and his clan were terrifying to Hershel, but Rick was able to push his way onto the farm. Here are two guys that would like to come to the farm as well.

This is where the writing to me was weak. They could of had the character's come off a little more subtle. It was too blunt that we as the viewer were supposed to find them so disgusting, so that it was justified that Rick shot and killed them. But, this was poorly handled. Did we need to have fat Tony asking about poontang, and pissing on the floor of the bar? Did we need Dave, the more talkative of the strangers peppering Rick with the same intrusive question over and over again? It's like okay okay I get it, their bad, stop knocking me over the head.

Also, is Hershel's sick daughter actually becoming a zombie? I don't think she is suffering from shock as was diagnosed by the non-medical members of the farm. She was attacked early in the episode when she inspected the body of her zombie mom. Maybe during that altercation she was infected, but that is just me speculating. What do you think?

This show is too bleak to enjoy these days, after watching everything else it just brings down my mood to gutter level. I'm dropping it now that Spartacus is back, .. I eagerly await the return of Gannicus!

@Just1Superguy - I don't think anyone can outright dispute the quality of the shows merits in production, its just not ever gonna be every ones type of entertainment. The show has a very bleak tone and its gore factor is mostly all it has going for it despite all the dramatic content. Granted fanboys hate exposition and just want action all the time but to do this kinda show as a continuing series, they'll have to offer more than what they have so far in content, it's growing tired real fast.

@Loudlon, couldn't agree more. Liked the pace of that scene and the show in general. Love the zombie action but the point of surviving is not to draw zombies out into a fight all the time or they'd just move to the burbs and have daily kill fests. They're trying to lay low away from the trouble. The human stories make up the meat of the show and I think the pace of this first returning episode was a fitting bridge from where it left off before the break. I have a feeling it's going to get a lot more exciting soon.

I don't have a problem with the story so far. I was a little annoyed with Rick trying to find Sophia, but the human drama has kept me going. Dale has gone from being my least to most favorite character on the show. The only problem is, during the first season their where iconic moments that seem to be missing this season. This show is reminding me of how HEROES turned out.

If you didnt think the second half of that episode was incredible I dont know what your problem is, jump off the hate band wagon and get it through your head this show isnt a gore fest

you had andrea with the scythe through the zombie moms head

lori hitting the zombie and Rick shooting those two dudes in of the most bad ass scenes ever

the first episode set up everyones reactions too sophia being dead now itl all snowball into one big crazy mess and I cant wait

the preview for the next episode makes it seem like it will be exciting similar to shane and otis in the zombie highschool

Personally I just hope the shane rumor is true and that they also kill off t-dog we were told that by this seasons end ALOT of zombies and survivors would be dead

First off as a fan of the book from the start and a fan of the show as well I thought the episode was fantastic. Secondly anyone complaining about the pacing of the show never read a single issue of the book. And I'm sorry to sound like a dick but if you've never read a single issue of the book you need to keep your opinions to yourself. The book is and never has been about horror, or blood and guts or hell even zombies eating people. The book is about the drama and emotion of life after a zombie apocalypse... hmmm could that be why the show based of it has the same idea? interesting idea! The show is almost as well written as the book and has that same emotion too it. If you want mindless, poorly written horror watch American Horror Story or even the painfully bad The River on ABC. But Horror and blood and guts is not what the walking dead is about.

The first half of the episode was very slow. Focusing more on the emotion felt by the massacre. This is to be expected everyone is going to react in their own way. The second half picks up. I new immediately when those two guys showed up they were a scouting party to a larger raiding group. What I love about it is watching Rick's expressions and responses compared to Hershel and Glenn's who were open with information. Rick knew the moment he laid eyes on those two men he was going to kill him. As the scene went on and the tension built (much like someone said earlier they kind of hit you over the head with these guys are supposed to be bad) the scene ended the way I thought it would. With Rick positioning himself to kill these two guys. Rewatch the scene and take particular notice to Rick's facial expressions compared to glenn's and hershel's, bloody brilliant.

I'm wondering if those men that Rick shot are connected to the Governor's camp? I know. I know. Fans keep bringing up rumors about the Governor but it's a decent question. If Michone is supposed to appear by this seaons's end or early next season then it makes sense that the Governor's appearance is fairly close.
Either way, I loved last night's episode and I am very pleased with this season.

First season has a nice balance of both zombies and story, this season is mainly just story with a little bit of zombies... the writers of Season 2 need to take a lesson from Frank Darabont. Do I enjoy it? yeah, not as much as season 1, i keep waiting for the unthinkable to happen. The amount of extra time to develop story and characters is not needed... because you do all that while keeping in tune with the action. Wait for the zombieland show to come out. I suspect it'll be closer to season 1 obviously with a more comedic element. But still quicker paced

what made the first season so much "better" then the second season was the escape from atlanta. pure and simple. rick woke up in hell and that was that. if rick hadent been in a coma and the show would have started with him already among the survivors then it wouldent have been nearly as tense. the tank scene, rick and glenn walking down the street covered in zombie blood, that was all to get out of atl. every single line of this show isnt fantastic, but most of it is. game of thrones is better, but thats pretty much it. homeland is very good to.
