ARROW: Even With That Name Drop, Fans Shouldn't Expect An Appearance From BATMAN

A few months ago, Oliver Queen's quick mention of Bruce Wayne in an episode of Arrow made some wonder if Batman could ever appear on the CW, but Marc Guggenheim has cautioned that it was all in good fun.

The rights to certain characters are always a tricky game for the CW; appearances from some fan-favorites on their superhero programs are always on and off the table due to decisions from the top brass at DC, most recently witnessed last week in relation to Deathstroke. While an appearance from Batman seems highly unlikely, the network hasn't been shy in dropping a few hints about the Dark Knight.

Most recently, Arrow's sixth season made a direct reference with Oliver Queen mentioning Bruce Wayne by name in a press conference, drumming up some possibility amongst fans that we could at least get an appearance from Batman in his civilian identity. Even Gotham star David Mazouz had his own ideas to bring his version of Wayne to the Arrowverse. However, Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim has cautioned that the shows are just having a bit of fun with their references.

"No, I love a good Easter egg, and I love doing the occasional name drop," Guggenheim told ComicBook. "You know, we name dropped Hal Jordan at the beginning of Season 3, but it's really just fun for us. I think in the Arrowverse we have our own Justice League and the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Batman ... these are all characters that are either spoken for on the movie side and/or other shows. There's a Bruce Wayne on Gotham."

"Over here on the CW, we're sort of a mischievous lot, and we enjoy the occasional Easter egg," Guggenheim said. "And our partners at DC are very tolerant of our mischief. But that's really all it is. Just good nature, good fanboy mischief."

Of course, you can never really say never, seeing as the network was able to get permission for Superman to appear. But for now, it seems that an appearance from the Caped Crusader is not in the cards.

Maybe once Gotham and Supergirl end we can get Batman and Superman in the Arrowverse properly.

They've got to be better than the DCEU versions anyway.

@Nightwing1015 - No lie, I've enjoyed Gotham's version of Bruce Wayne and 2 episodes of his "Bat-Boy" more than the DCEU's Batman.

@KWilly - I completely agree. Hopefully they get a 5th season to complete his transformation.

@Nightwing1015 - Yeah, Gotham has nailed Bruce's character development. Helps that they got a great actor playing him. And I'm sure S5 is a possibility, cuz I think they got an 85% renewal chance.

@Nightwing1015 - Gotham and Supergirl aren't what's preventing these characters though. It's all the movie side. They don't want to have a character appear on the shows when they already have a live action appearance. Hence why it's not Batman, but a young Bruce Wayne and why it's Supergirl with the occasional visit from Superman. Flash is the only example but that's because it started before they had any idea of doing the Justice League with him and by that point the show became uber popular.

@Origame - But the Arrow producer says that it's partially due to Gotham here. Fox must have the TV rights to Bruce wayne. That would probably stop Batman from appearing on another show no matter what his age.

@Nightwing1015 - Gotham Bruce and Supergirl Clark better than than Affleck and Cavill? I loved the part where bruce fell through the glass sky roof and pulled his mask off in front of criminals and cops. Also loved when Clark tried to beat Kara's ass cuz, you know, tv. Great value batman and superman belong where they do. On network television. They're fine there.

@loganmac36 - Gotham's Bruce is better than Affleck for this scene alone. He's only 14 and yet realises that Batman should't kill people. Affleck missed that memo.

Supergirl's Superman obviously shouldn't have lost that fight but the overall performance is better and more accurate that Cavill was in BvS.

"And our partners at DC are very tolerant of our mischief."

If you just stop at that quote, it explains a lot about this show and this universe. Especially Olicity.

I guess it makes sense. The CW is the channel hub for DC heroes not displayed anywhere else. Y'kno, besides the Flash. Which to be honest, we probably won't see Ezra Miller's Flash again for a looong time. If ever...

We get 10 YEARS of this which had him doing everything except flying and wearing the suit

Then they really go for it and straight up give us Superman

Buuut we cant get a live action tv Batman? Especially now?

@Kevwebsz - Well the Supergirl appearances have only been I don't even think 5 episodes and the rest of the time they come up with crazy restrictions as to why he isn't involved in the big event. Maybe that could be how we'll eventually get Batman but don't count on it.

@Kevwebsz - He's been an excellent Superman in what little we've seen of him. He needs his due. Failing that, if they made him scruffier, he'd make a decent MCU Wolverine actually, I think.

We live in a time when DC's Arrowverse on TV is much better than DCEU with hundreds of millions of dollars budget.

That 4-episodes crossover was better than anything DCEU movies has given us so far.

Wasn't the purpose of the different universes that DC tv can use characters and not clash with the DCEU?
