The CW has cast The Ray! It's been announced today that British actor Russell Tovey will take on the role of the comic book character, voicing him in the upcoming animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray before making the leap to live-action in this year's Arrowverse crossover. It's unclear whether or not he'll become part of one of these shows and which Earth he hails from (Earth-X seems likely).
It's been confirmed that this iteration of the character will be gay. Here's the official description:
"Raymond 'Ray' Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a 'genetic light bomb.' The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice — he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists."
It very much sounds like The Ray's animated series on CW Seed will fill in his past before we get to meet him in November. Chances are he'll join the Legends of Tomorrow cast but it's feasible that he'll only make sporadic appearances moving forward. We'll just have to wait and see!
