The first season of Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max last January to positive reviews and, while streamers remain secretive about "ratings," we're pretty sure it was a hit.
The show was quickly renewed, and while there was no real mention of The Suicide Squad spin-off during DC Studios' "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate reveal, James Gunn recently confirmed he's currently hard at work writing the second batch of episodes.
Earlier this year, another spin-off was confirmed when we learned Waller will be one of the projects kicking off a new era of storytelling as part of the DCU. With Viola Davis' Amanda Waller put front and centre, "Team Peacemaker" is expected to appear, and we'd be shocked John Cena's Christopher Smith also isn't present.
Now that Gunn is once again working on Peacemaker, some rumours about his "plans" have inevitably started doing the rounds online; among them is a possible supporting role for Bat-Mite!
For those of you who aren't familiar with the character, he's an imp similar to the Superman villain Mister Mxyzptlk. Depicted as a small, childlike man in an ill-fitting copy of Batman's costume, Bat-Mite possesses what appear to be near-infinite magical powers, but he actually uses highly advanced technology from the fifth dimension that cannot be understood by humans' limited three-dimensional views.
Unlike Mxyzptlk, Bat-Mite idolizes his superhero target and has visited the Dark Knight on various occasions, often setting up strange and ridiculous events so that he can see his hero in action.
Sounds pretty great, right? Unfortunately, while Gunn is a big fan of the character, the filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO has now confirmed he won't be part of Peacemaker season 2. We're not overly surprised by this clarification but it sure would have been fun to see Smith and Bat-Mite head into action together.
"Peacemaker quickly establishes itself as essential viewing for fans of The Suicide Squad," we said in our season 1 review, "but it's a career-best performance from John Cena and the greatest opening credits of all time that will make sure you want to come back each week."
Peacemaker follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad - a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
The series was renewed for a second season last February but doesn't have a confirmed release date (we're not expecting to see it for at least another two or three years). The first eight episodes of Peacemaker are currently streaming on Max.
