SUPERGIRL Spoilers: Here's How The Series Finale Wrapped Up Kara Danvers And Lex Luthor's Story Arcs

Supergirl aired its final episode on The CW last night, but how did Kara Danvers' story wrap up after enlisting some familiar faces to battle Lex Luthor and Nyxly? Find a full breakdown after the jump...

After six seasons, Supergirl reached its end on The CW last night. The show originally debuted on CBS, but was saved by the network following an expensive first season and the Girl of Steel was eventually brought into the Arrowverse. So, how did things wrap up for Kara Danvers and company?

Weakening Lex Luthor and Nyxly, our heroes took on them and an assortment of familiar foes from the past. Jimmy (Mehcad Brooks), Winn (Jeremy Jordan), and Mon-El (Chris Wood) all returned to lend a helping hand, and Lex's downfall came when he opened up the Phantom Zone in the hope its inhabitants would destroy Supergirl. Instead, he and Nyxly were dragged there and imprisoned.

After teasing the future for some of the show's characters, we learn that Cat Grant has offered Kara the opportunity to be her new Editor-in-Chief. The hero knows that accepting the offer will have a major impact on her life because trying to balance a role like that with secretly being Supergirl is impossible.

Alex and Kelly get married, Lena becomes godmother to their daughter, and Brainy returns to Earth to be with Nia. J'onn finds out he's going to have a son, and Kara enjoys catching up with old friends before Cat asks why she hasn't accepted her offer. Revealing she knows Kara is Supergirl, Cat imparts some words of wisdom and Lena encourages her friend to live her own life.

Leaving her glasses behind at the wedding, we later see a news report from Cat in which she introduces CatCo's new EIC: Kara Danvers, a.k.a Supergirl.

So, the series doesn't end with the hero leaving Earth or dying; instead, her identity is known to the world and she'll continue serving as Supergirl while getting to live a "normal" life. It's a cool ending and one that leaves the door open to Melissa Benoist potentially reprising the role down the line. For now, though, we're assuming the focus will be put on Sasha Calle's Supergirl in The Flash movie.

@OptimusCrime - Yeah, I'm not sure the show grasped the idea that her identity being kept a secret also helped protect her, as well. Like, from a supervillain who wants revenge way, not some be yourself way

@dagenspear -

I think they tried to address that possibility by using Alex's coming out,her adoptive parenthood,
and her marriage, as an example of exposing yourself to attack by society and villains in paticular
as a risk worth taking in service to "living your truth"

Alex's life choices exposed her adoptive daughter to danger and the Super Friends handled it as a family. Kara came to the same conclusion after talking to Lena that it was worth it to take the risk
of being attacked by "Outing" herself and any trouble that comes from that would be handled by
her family.

I hope Clark doesn’t have a problem with the world knowing his identity as well then.

@Twenty23Three - yeah, it's not gonna be long before the cousin of this one superpowered character happens to look a lot like Superman

@Twenty23Three - Kara revealing herself as Supergirl doesn't affect the Clark nor his family due to the only thing the world has always known since Supergirl S1 is that Superman and Supergirl are family relatives. Cousins.

Besides finding out that Kara Danvers aka Supergirl has always been the cousin of Superman, the rest of the characters' lives in Smallville will not change so much at all.

@NinnesMBC - I mean, it is known in the world of the shows that A:Supergirl is Kara, B: Kara’s cousin is Clark Kent and, C:Supergirl’s cousin is Superman. Not exactly hard to put it all together. Then again superpowered Nazis from an alternative universe turned up to Barrys wedding and it was never mentioned by anyone afterwards

@Twenty23Three -

When Tyler's Clark Kent visited Catco with Kara and met Cat Grant who he had known years before
at the Daily Planet,Kara explained her knowing him as being a result of him being an old friend of Jimmy Olson who she was dating at the time, and not as her cousin.

Sure, Kara spoke about Clark as her cousin to people who already knew he was Superman, but
I don't recall off the bat where Kara said Clark was her cousin to people outside the loop.

@WarnerBrother -

Just had to add to my previous comment.

The show never made any big deal to link Kara Danvers to Clark Kent during her professional life.
She didn't go around talking to random about being Clarks cousin.

Even if she did over the course of the show, that could be retconned away if it happened before crisis.
And even after crisis by Jonn mentally wiping that from the world's memory.

@Twenty23Three - Only A and C are at this point are known facts but the about it being public knowledge regarding Clark Kent and Kara Danvers being family isn't. They know that the superheroes of Superman and Supergirl are relatives. Not that their alter egos are also related.

It isn't like the citizens of Central City were all invited to that wedding that went off the rails either.

Should've ended with Kara, Mon el, brainy and Nia on the future with the legion of super-heroes like JLU. Not a show that i watch tho, so it doesnt bother me
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 11/10/2021, 4:18 PM
@Dannywest - That was also one of my prefered choices. But since neither of them died and more than once the goodbyes between Kara and Mon-El since S2 have ended up with them meeting once again I am sure something will change down the road in another crossover or perhaps if Superman & Lois wants to develop a story that involves the Legionnaires.

Second hour sucked

@dracula - I completely agree. The second was all epilogue to the climax from the first hour. They should have finished the climax in the second hour with the last half the epilogue. It drug severely at the end.

@batmbl - the actual ending was pretty good though (If you ignore the 100th episode).

Way they stopped lex was terrible.

Clearly they were trying to make it big with all the returning cgi villain, but in the end it was very hallow.

Love Jon Cryer but don't think he would fit the superman and lois tone. If lex ever shows up, hope they recast and recharacterize

I'll be fair, I'm not sure if this will effect Clark. I think they have identities that aren't really that connected in this show. But Kara does have immediately known family, who are, basically, very human or at least not superpowered like her.

Really thought it was a great ending for Kara/Supergirl’s story. Was amazing how she was getting a power boost from the sun and she saw she needs to inspire hope in everyone. Melissa truly is Supergirl now and forever and one of the greatest to ever wear the S. Was great how so many from the past seasons came back and Kara wasn’t afraid to reveal her identity to the world and got to be editor in chief of Catco. Was amazing to see all the messages fellow CW stars and critics etc have said about Melissa as Supergirl and Chyler as Alex and David as Martian Manhunter!

I thought that the 19th episode was pretty good. And then the first 10 or so minutes of the finale, up until basically the Legion arrives. I did enjoy seeing some of those villains return again, conjured up by Lex, but the Legion largely did nothing and then left (and Mon-el as a character not returning again for the wedding just seemed strange). And the way Lex and Nyxly got defeated was honestly pretty unsatisfying, a very anti-climatic ending for them. There were a lot of questions left unanswered, or minor plot lines left unfinished. But more importantly, they ended the fight against Lex and Nyxly WAY too early. It should have taken up half of the episode. Because the rest of the episode really dragged and was quite boring much of the time. Too much talking, too much dialogue, too much emotion, etc., and really just not a lot going on. Yes, the wedding was nice and resulted in a good wrap up for some of the characters, but so much time was wasted leading up to it.

In terms of finales for the Arrowverse, this was the weakest so far, with Black Lightning being better and then of course Arrow being great. But, I think that Supergirl was aiming for the type of landing that SHIELD had with their finale, and they really missed the mark. How SHIELD ended their storyline and left their main characters, THAT is how you properly end a show in this manner. It was like all of the momentum in this final Supergirl season going into the finale, all of the energy, it just dissipated and we were left on a "meh" note.

Overall, this season wavered a bit. It was better than last season, but of course not as good as the really strong season 4. The middle part of this season was quite weak. When the quest for the gauntlet really began, that's when the show started to pick up, and then of course when Lex appears again, the show jumped quite a bit in quality and enjoyment. His return, up through the first 10 or so minutes of the finale was pretty good.

Anyways, kudos to Supergirl and team for wrapping the show up on their terms. While the show has had many ups and downs, for the last several years it has largely been the bar for "average" in the Arrowverse, and been better than The Flash and even some seasons of Legends. Even though the show had its fair share of issues and quality and writing, I'll certainly miss seeing this team on screen again (I honestly enjoyed the Superfriends more than Team Flash or the Legends these days, there are more characters in the Superfriends that are interesting and written well enough than on those other shows), and some characters in particular.

I hope that we see some of these characters again in the future on Superman & Lois or in an Arrowverse crossover. Namely, Martian Manhunter (for DEO stuff, would make sense), Brainy (probably the best written and acted hero on the show tbh), Jimmy, Kara (the kids have to see their aunt, yes?), and of course Lex again. While the way Lex went out was disappointing, there is no denying that Cryer as Lex is a real scene stealer, he is just so great in the role. I'd love to see him really go toe to toe against Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, especially with that quality of writing. Cryer delivered not only the best take on Lex, but also one of the top villains in the Arrowverse- it has been a real pleasure watching his Lex. Here's hoping for more.

That was the longest finale ever. When they first said that the finale was going to last 2 hours I thought that the first one would be to remember the show and the the 2nd one the actual final episode, similar to what they did in Arrow last year.

So about the finale, the penultimate episode was pretty good in how they were building up to the exchange of the totems. I caught the reference that Lex made to S1 about the location where Fort Rozz fell and the incident with the Omegahedron, which was one of the things involved in the 1st Season.

I liked the confrontation between Kara and Alex after she took the Destiny Totem which I think they also mentioned that it could've been the Loom of Fate from Legends S5.

The scene with Brainy and Nia with the Dream Totem was aesthetically cool.

The dynamic between Lex and Nyxly regarding how they wanted to obtain the Love Totem from Esme was good because it led eventually to their first fight as well to flesh out how Nyxly does have a soft spot for children whereas Lex doesn't. Adding Lillian into the mix was the right powder since she also wanted the totems for herself.

Lex released Mxy as well in his way of "helping" Nyxly get the Love Totem, crossing fingers he appears later again somewhere else.

The best scene from the the 19th episode was when Kara was really going forward with the sun satelite strategy to power herself up until she realized it was way too much of a villain move. Moments like that one lived up to the theme of the Season about how the conflict beyond the gauntlets of the totems was how far they were willing to go to stop Nyxly and Lex. I sure would've liked more if they faced more consequences due to what they almost did.

RIP Lillian.

Funny how Lex and Nyxly's first fight in the present had dire drawbacks on everyone in the world and the speech Kara made was a nod to the S1 finale.

The cameo of Red Tornado among the group of villains Lex brought back with his shard of the AllStome was my favourite.

Loved this line up.

Lex and Nyxly's hubris being used against themselves by the Phantoms was a nice twist. Jon Cryer already expressed being open to return either in Superman & Lois or in other show because there's no prison that can hold him. He'll be more dangerous if he gets out from this one. Although I wonder what would happen to his and Nyxly's shards of the AllStone since they were taken with them to the Phantom Zone.

I really wished Mon-El could have returned for the wedding whereas Brainy went full "sprock logic". Then again he wasn't sure he'd be able to comeback because in the end Brainy never merged with the Big Brain so the door remains as open for him as well to show up in another show or crossover, every time he and Kara bid farewell they end up meeting again in different circumstances.

The wedding of Alex and Kelly sure was long and took 2/3 of the finale, think it was some type of experiment in narrative to see if they can end up other shows like this with the cast relaxing after the final battle and wrap up whatever was left.

The duet between Kara and Winn at the wedding was sweet and damn he should actually call himself Spoilder Lad because he was throwing spoilers all over: from the DEO returning to J'onn having a son with Miss Martian in the 31st century.

Looks like Esme will grow up to be a photographer if the camera Jimmy gave to her is any indication.

At least Brainy and Nia got their happy ending. If they marry it can't be in a crossover because the last one (WestAllen) got invaded by doppelganger nazis.

Weird choice to make Lena of all people the godmother of Esme, but whatever.

Cat's return was unexpected.

And as for Kara revealing herself as Supergirl in that interview with Cat at the end (it really reminded me to the one she did to Nia as Dreamer in S4) I wouldn't have got it if she didn't bring up the failed gauntlet with the Courage Totem, so from that angle I see from where they were coming from. And at least in this case she does it for herself instead that for keeping a friendship that had gone toxic with Lena in S5 in the 100th ep's alt. realities.

This makes her alongside Oliver the other JL member to have their identity reveal but in her case it isn't post-mortem.

They all lived in the end. Now her and the others' stories should continue through other crossovers or spin-offs.

I give this finale overall a 6/10.
