After six seasons, Supergirl reached its end on The CW last night. The show originally debuted on CBS, but was saved by the network following an expensive first season and the Girl of Steel was eventually brought into the Arrowverse. So, how did things wrap up for Kara Danvers and company?
Weakening Lex Luthor and Nyxly, our heroes took on them and an assortment of familiar foes from the past. Jimmy (Mehcad Brooks), Winn (Jeremy Jordan), and Mon-El (Chris Wood) all returned to lend a helping hand, and Lex's downfall came when he opened up the Phantom Zone in the hope its inhabitants would destroy Supergirl. Instead, he and Nyxly were dragged there and imprisoned.
After teasing the future for some of the show's characters, we learn that Cat Grant has offered Kara the opportunity to be her new Editor-in-Chief. The hero knows that accepting the offer will have a major impact on her life because trying to balance a role like that with secretly being Supergirl is impossible.
Alex and Kelly get married, Lena becomes godmother to their daughter, and Brainy returns to Earth to be with Nia. J'onn finds out he's going to have a son, and Kara enjoys catching up with old friends before Cat asks why she hasn't accepted her offer. Revealing she knows Kara is Supergirl, Cat imparts some words of wisdom and Lena encourages her friend to live her own life.
Leaving her glasses behind at the wedding, we later see a news report from Cat in which she introduces CatCo's new EIC: Kara Danvers, a.k.a Supergirl.
So, the series doesn't end with the hero leaving Earth or dying; instead, her identity is known to the world and she'll continue serving as Supergirl while getting to live a "normal" life. It's a cool ending and one that leaves the door open to Melissa Benoist potentially reprising the role down the line. For now, though, we're assuming the focus will be put on Sasha Calle's Supergirl in The Flash movie.
