Eight seasons in, and The Flash is arguably running on fumes. However, The CW series is still delivering some fun storylines and is currently in the midst of exploring the Negative Speed Force.

Plans for a ninth season of the show were recently confirmed, though the belief is that it will be a truncated season to wrap up Barry Allen's story in the Arrowverse. When the current batch of episodes were being written, the team working on the series didn't know if they'd be back for another year, and that is why John Diggle's Green Lantern story arc was recently wrapped up.

The Arrow character chose not to wear a Power Ring in order to remain on Earth with his family, and showrunner Eric Wallace has now elaborated on that decision. "We were thinking, 'Oh my goodness, we have to do this because maybe no one will get a chance to!'" he explained.

"I talked to David [Ramsey] myself, and told him, 'I'd like to give this some closure,' and he was all in favor of it. And when I told him what we had planned, he thought it sounded fantastic."

Wallace was still thinking about the future by having Diggle turn down the opportunity to join the Green Lantern Corps, and between this and Deathstorm's introduction, it appears he's still plotting some sort of Blackest Night adaptation. Saying this "served a larger purpose," he added: "I’m a comic book nerd and I wanted to plant some Blackest Night seeds, and that Diggle moment helped me do that. But I don’t know if we’ll ever get to it."

The comic book version of that story revolved around the villainous Nekron, a personified force of death, who reanimated deceased superheroes in an effort to eliminate all life and emotion from the universe. That would be an epic way to wrap up The Flash's final season, and could lead to the return of some familiar faces.
