It's official: an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's seminal comic series, The Sandman, is coming to Netflix.

We found out that the streaming giant was nearing a deal to adapt Gaiman's classic DC Vertigo run last night, and it's now been confirmed that an 11-episode first season has been ordered.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the brilliant team that is Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg to finally bring Neil’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman, to life onscreen,” said Channing Dungey, VP, Original Series, Netflix. “From its rich characters and storylines to its intricately built-out worlds, we’re excited to create an epic original series that dives deep into this multi-layered universe beloved by fans around the world.”

The Sandman has languished in development hell for a long time, with several failed attempts to get the property off the ground as a movie. Fans will obviously be hoping that this latest venture yields results, but after being let down so many time, they'll probably only believe that it's really happening once they see a trailer.

In the meantime, we'll have to make do with an official logline.

“A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.”

Allan Heinberg (The Catch, Grey’s Anatomy) will write and serve as showrunner on The Sandman, while Gaiman and David Goyer (Constantine, Flashforward) are on board as executive-producers.

Dc making a series with a streaming service that isn't its own streaming service?

@AndrewHolland - This show only exists because of Netflix:

"Sources say Warners, which controls the IP, took the Sandman TV pitch to multiple outlets, including corporate sibling HBO. The premium cable network did not make a play for the series, given the massive price tag attached (and likely number of other big world shows in the works), and Netflix snapped it up as the streamer continues to make an active play for massive IP that could be turned into subscriber-friendly franchises a la Amazon's Lord of the Rings and HBO's Game of Thrones." - THR

Shows like this & HBO's Watchmen should be the future of DC on TV.

@tmp3 - And Swamp Thing, before they decided to kill it. Hopefully the future holds more of this and less cheap lowest common denominator shows for the CW crowd.

@Forthas - Every few years we get another Lord of the Flies riff

@tmp3 - I don't think it is a direct remake. It is just the same themes and plot points. Space could offer a different wrinkle so I am a bit interested in it.

@Forthas - Yeah, but that's what I mean. Every few years we get a variation on the ideas presented in that book.

@tmp3 - I can't think of any films but I can see a few television shows that could be seen that way.

@Forthas - I had to write a paper in Middle School about the similarities between Lord of The Flies & The Hunger Games, so there's at least one big multi-billion dollar franchise that shares ideas with it.

David Goyer is comic book movie / tv poison. Everything he touches turns rotten. Why don't studios realize this?

The Dark Knight movies don't count because the Nolans had more story input and script writing duties than he did (thank god!).

@bcom - He's been involved with Sandman since the very first cinematic attempt; it's likely a legal reason he's an exec producer - same reason Jon Peters is involved in every Superman & A Star is Born film.

For those old enough to remember this comic series, it was a HUGE deal! Ground breaking writing that had a huge fan base at the time. Anyone that tunes in when this is released will be captivated....if it is done right.

Morpheus has two sets of famous grandparents:

Mom's side: Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor.

Dad's side: Hawkman and Hawkwoman.

@Battabing - Lets hope this doesn't have any connections to other DC properties. The story-telling is what made Sandman so great, it just happened to be a DC comic too.

@Battabing - That's "Dream"...not "Morpheus". Dream is the name both Morpheus & Daniel use, but Morpheus has no relation to Fury or Hector. They are Dream Daniel's Grandparents...
