Comic book writer turned occasional “Lost” maestro Brian K. Vaughan apparently exists within the hit series’ universe now. The multi-talented comic book all-star behind the Vertigo series “Y: The Last Man” and “Ex Machina” has held such titles as producer, writer and executive story editor over the last few seasons, but this week, Hugo’s airport reading habits appear to have placed him firmly on the inside of the “Lost” universe.

On last night’s episode, titled “316,” Hugo was caught clearly reading a Spanish-language edition of “Y: The Last Man, Vol. 3: One Small Step” – or “Y, El Último Hombre” as it appeared on screen.

The comic book cameo was certainly a wink at Vaughan’s comic book fanbase, who cheered him on when he joined fellow comics scribe Jeph Loeb over at the “Lost” office for the show’s third season. But the plot of that particular volume of “Y” is worth keeping in mind, too.

The third volume of Vaughan’s hit series focused on several astronauts returning to an Earth that has changed in very drastic and mysterious ways since they left it, and various factions on the ground racing to receive the new arrivals. Could this have some very specific implications for both the episode and the current “Lost” story arc? Well, as any “Lost” fan knows, everything in the series seems to have been included for a very specific purpose.

For those who didn’t pick up the comics, “Y” is currently being developed into a feature film with “Eagle Eye” director D.J. Caruso attached and was known for its “Lost”-style cliffhangers and Easter eggs — just the kind of scripting that Vaughan was all to happy to bring aboard on “Lost.”

Vaughan is also known for throwing references to other books and scattered pop culture touchstones into his own work. Now, it looks like he’s getting a chance to get a little self-referential — even if it is in Spanish.

Did you catch the brief shot of Hugo reading “Y: The Last Man” last night on “Lost”? What did you think of Hugo’s choice of reading material? What does it mean for the series? Chime in with your reactions in the comment section below!

yeah i caught that, and I like how the themes of both that comic and the show's current direction relate.

Don't know why the comic is in spanish, its weird because the comics that Walt used to read in season 1 were in spanish too

My friends and I are all huge Y: the last man and Lost fans and after this episode we got into a long discussion about the tie ins between the two. In that issue, the astronauts that crash are two men and a woman who had been trapped on a space station for two years and the men die saving the woman's life. The woman is pregnant and does not know who the father is because she "loved them both so much".
Now the obvious connection is that Kate is gonna get pregnant after having sex with Sawyer and since she just had sex with Jack, is not going to know who the baby's daddy is. If this does happen then the connection will be very clear and since Darlton and JJ don't ever put something in without a reason, I wouldn't be surprised if Kate is preggers by the end of the season

Yeah, like when we see Sawyer living with Juliett and stuff, it never explains were Dan is.

ROR-

I was wondering the same thing. One of the Mechanic's working with Juliet kinda looked like Dan and that had me wondering if that was him. Think i'll re-watch the ep tonight to get a better look.

BTW, I hated that dude in Saving Private Ryan where he was the "p*ssy soldier" standing in the next room crying and shaking while the dude who saved his life got killed while begging for his help. Arrgggghhh!!! That scene still makes me mad!!!

Good actor tho, lol.

Don't know if this is the answer you're lookin for but if you can remember some episodes ago, I believe starting the new season of Lost, Dan was seen working on the Orchid station as a Darhma employee. So my guess is he blended in like the rest of them. Perhaps in coming episodes they will show more of that.

lol, i know he was a serious wimp in that movie..then after to make himself feel better he shoots an unarmed German soldier! What a little prick! He is a very good..if limited actor. He was pretty much the same character in Rescue Dawn aswell.

oh yeah, cheers comicknight i do remember that. I guess he never really recovers from Charlottes death, my guess is he will end up telling her not to come back to the island..i mean he has to really ..its very confusing!

yeah, dan was working down at the orchid, right when they were drilling for it...which fits in well, since he has such an expertise on everything with time travel and all

what i don't really get is why dan would end up telling young charlotte not to come back. we know that he did, he had to of if charlotte remembers it, but dan of all people should know well that even if he told her back then, she would still die nonetheless, that you can't change the pattern of time. but he still tried anyway...

You guys do know he's a writer and producer on the show right? LOL
Thats why it's in there. Why wouldn't you pimp your own stuff. He's co-written some great eps :D
