GAME OF THRONES won its first Emmy this evening for Best Title Sequence. The much lauded HBO series beat out the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Too Big to Fail, Rubicon, and Any Human Heart.

Angus Wall, the man in charge of the title scene's design, had this to say about the opening:

We wanted to do something different from the standard tropes for fantasy maps. So we came up with the idea of a world inside a sphere. In the shadowed areas beneath the surface of the map, there are cogs in there. If you look carefully, you'll see they're all working with the cogs that are exposed above the surface of the map.

GAME OF THRONES has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards in total, winning Saturday's award at the annual Creative Arts Emmys. Tune in this weekend to see the fantasy epic compete for four more trophies in the Primetime Emmy Awards.
