Maisie Williams Thought GAME OF THRONES Season 8 Sex Scene Was A Prank... Because She Assumed Arya Was Queer

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has revealed that she initially believed Arya & Gendry's infamous season 8 sex scene was a prank by the showrunners because she'd always assumed her character was gay.

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has addressed her character's "controversial" sex scene in the final season, revealing that she was surprised when she first read about it in the script - but probably not for the reason you might expect.

Williams debuted as Arya Stark in the very first episode of the HBO show when she was just 12 years old, and would go on to become one of the most popular stars of the mega-successful fantasy series over the next eight years. Arya's sexuality was never specifically addressed until season 8, but fans generally assumed that the tomboy-ish character identified as queer... as did Williams!

“The first time that I was surprised by Arya I guess was probably in the final series where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry,” Maisie said during a Teen Vogue Firsts video interview. “I thought that Arya was queer, you know? So… yeah. That was a surprise.”

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were known for sending out fake script pages to protect spoilers and attempt to fool the cast, and Williams initially thought she was being pranked.

“At first, I thought it was a prank,” Williams added. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the showrunners were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh [frick]!””

Because so many fans were under the impression that Arya was gay, her sex scene with Gendry drew quite a bit of backlash. Of course, you can't blame the writers for going in a different direction than viewers anticipated, but we know GOT fans can be more than a little touchy about this stuff in general!

Williams has previously said that she'd be open to reprising the role should the opportunity arise. As of right now, HBO doesn't have any plans to continue on from the divisive series finale (all of the spin-offs currently in development are prequels), but that doesn't mean it won't happen someday.

We'd certainly be down for catching up with an older Arya as she makes her way around Westeros as a master assassin!

I wasn't really weirded out by that scene mainly because her and I are the same age. It did feel a little random though.

So glad we got Arya butt shots and not night king dialogue. Money well spent

@Unconforming - Though there is tough competition, I think the most disappointing thing for me with how the show wrapped up was that Bran's time traveling plot thread was essentially reduced to only a way to confirm Jon Snow's parentage for the audience and characters (which presumably could have been done by Howland Reed, who was still walking around Westeros somewhere). More historical connection with the Night King and strategic use of the time traveling by Bran could have really added depth to the last season.

So... Williams didnt read the books huh... I wonder if the actors are asked to not read the books because it might interfere with their current head space.

@shadowboxxx - this happened in the books?
Odin

@Vigor - No. In the books Arya is still in Bravos. And since the characters in the books don't age with the same speed as the actors did in this show, Arya is still a kid. Her sexuality has not been explored practically at all.

@Vigor - No not that part. Its alot of youthful flirting/play fighting between the two. She CLEARLY likes him like that but would never admit it.

@Odin - Bro she clearly has feelings for him, she likes him and wants him to like her. theres a part about her staring at him when he works, looking at his muscles and stuff. She's young so its just not explicit.

I'm pretty sure Arya's sexuality wasn't the problem for many with this sex scene though...

Anyway, I kinda assumed the opposite. After that whole no face business I thought she was asexual
