HBO has now officially announced that production on House of the Dragon is scheduled for 2021 (previous reports have indicted that it'll be earlier in the year), and the Game of Thrones Twitter account has also shared our first look at some official concept art for the show.
The artwork spotlights one of the dragons that'll be introduced during the series. The beast is not named, but we assume it's either Syrax (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen's steed), or Sunfyre (her half-brother Aegon's).
We recently learned that Paddy Considine will play the lead role of King Viserys Targaryen, but there's been no further casting news since. There is a rumor doing the rounds that former Doctor Who Matt Smith is being courted to play Viserys' younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen, however.
House of the Dragon is being developed as a 10-episode first season, co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony). Condal also wrote the script with Sara Lee Hess, and will serve as co-showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik. The latter will direct the pilot and additional episodes.
The show is on track for a 2022 premiere.
