While the Comic-Con trailer for Watchmen did reveal that the upcoming Damon Lindelof series would debut in October, HBO has now reaffirmed the news by formally announcing the series premiere date at their TCA summer press tour appearance earlier today, while also confirming that the first season would run a total of nine episodes.

Lindelof also engaged in an extensive Q&A in which he shared a number of interesting details about the story he hopes to tell within this unique world, where the line between heroes and villains is murky... at best. "It is an examination of institutions and culture and politics and things that inform our society."

"There are no easy answers. There are no grandiose solutions. In a traditional superhero movie, the bad guys are fighting aliens and when they beat the aliens, the aliens go back to their planet and everybody wins. There's no defeating white supremacy. It's not going anywhere, so it felt like it was a pretty formidable foe."

Now, as for whether Lindelof thinks his series has done the source material justice, it seems that he's still not sure. "I went through a very intensive period of terror of [frick]ing it up and I'm not entirely sure I'm out of that tunnel."

I'm sure the discourse around this is going to be [frick]ing awful, but everything about this show sounds incredibly fascinating. Of course Rorschach's ramblings would attract the worst kind of people - to the point where they're quoting him verbatim but perverting the original message. Rorschach was never the hero of the story, and anyone who thought so missed the point of what Moore was trying to say.
Using the original 12-issue series as a jumping off point to tell thematically relevant stories for today, like how the comic felt thematically relevant in the late-80's, is an incredibly bold move from Lindelof; and tackling issues like race and white supremacy is certainly going to piss off the worst kind of people.
After The Leftovers I'd see anything Lindelof does, but taking such a big thematic swing on something that's been butchered with safe prequels, sequels and a beat-em-up video game seems bold and exciting.

Oh yeah, and Jean Smart was confirmed as being Laurie Juspeczyk/Blake at the TCA panel too.

@tmp3 - I hope this show does incredibly well.

I'm a fan of the graphic novel. And the Leftovers is one of the greatest tv shows of all time.

Also I want to see in my lifetime a live action adaptation of Domsday Clock. This series being good and popular will only help that. lol

@tmp3 - phenomenal examination of what this series is aiming for, and what will come out of it. I'm thrilled!!

@Comicbookart - Saw the 1st season of Leftovers recently, I thought it was overrated and lacked direction. I can definitely see it's impact on Avengers Endgame as it had a similar premise but I just couldn't get into it.

Hopefully Watchmen is better as I am unimpressed by the trailer. Being a fan of the comics and appreciating Snyder's flawed film, this is going to be a hard sell for me if I have to commit 9 hours for the 1st season.

@tmp3 - As long as they don't go with the ham fisted all white people are racist bent I don't think anyone will have a problem with it. And I don't Lindelof would do anything that lacked subtlety. After the Leftovers I'd watch entire TV series about cooking toast if he were the show runner.

When did The Watchmen have ANYTHING to do with fighting "white supremacy", whatever the definition of that is to the producers of this? So, the anti-heroes are going to spend their time beating up elite liberals in their gated communities? Seems like a big diversion from the premise of the original.

@CapnMurphy2021 - It is a guilty pleasure of mine actually. I am not sure why. I think the mythology is interesting. So I guess to your question, they are making it for people like me!

@Forthas - I don’t mean that as an insult or anything... I watch (eventually and especially if my wife is busy) most sci-fi/action/cbm stuff... but the last two did worse and worse critically and box office(if I’m not mistaken) and Vin is getting old for that kinda role? Maybe not though?
