WATCHMEN Concept Art Reveals An Alternate Take On Regina King's Sister Night

A new video features comments from actress Regina King about being cast in HBO's Watchmen as well as concept art depicting a version of Sister Night which leans heavily into religious imagery!

Sister Night was a newly created character for Watchmen, but someone who is now vital to the mythos of this world after inheriting the powers of Dr. Manhattan. In an interview with Variety, actress Regina King looked back on being cast as police detective Angela Abar, explaining that her script came bundled with a piece of concept art revealing what her character could look like.

"When I received the script, there was a letter in the script," King recalled. "And there's an artist rendering of Sister Night with my face. I mean, I just got chills, just again, going back to that moment."

Sister Night's costume was clearly inspired by Christian nuns, but this early design was more overt in terms of religious imagery. It's a little too on the nose in some respects, but easy enough to understand why King was excited to see herself suited up as a bona fide superhero in Watchmen.

Recently, King confirmed that the only way she would return to the Watchmen Universe is if showrunner Damon Lindelof returns, but he's said on multiple occasions that he's done with these characters.

Man, I wish there were a way to watch this series without subscribing to HBO Max (I can't justify adding yet another streaming service to the ones I already have).

I like how much thought went into the costume design, and how they all told us something about the characters, just like the costumes did in the original. Rorschach’s mask was so open to interpretation while his view on morality was so black in white, in contrast to Mirror Guy’s mask blasting what’s actually there back to you, while he himself was so oblivious to the world around him the whole time.
Also loved how shoddily put together the Minutemen looked, using materials that would have existed during that time period.

Fun fact: Hooded Justice was originally called "Brother Night" by Moore and Gibbons, when he was going to be a Spectre style phantom before they decided to make Dr. Manhattan the only explicitly superhero character. That and the color scheme of Will's clothes had people guessing the twist all the way back in Episode 1.

Also, I just started rereading DC: The New Frontier and I forgot all about its 1950s version of Steel / the name John Henry (implied at the end to inspire John Henry Irons) who wears a black hood, a noose around his neck and beats the shit out of KKK members. It's a subplot within the book, but one of the best and I don't know how I forgot about it when I watched Watchmen.

Speaking of Catholic-themed vigilantes, If I can't get a decent version of Huntress from DC, then I'll settle for a live-action Magdalena
