AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Officially Renewed For Season 7 - But They May Be Down One Key Member
In a surprising development, ABC has renewed the low-rated Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a seventh season ahead of its sixth season premiere next summer, but one key cast member may not return...
Ahead of its sixth season premiere next summer, ABC has officially renewed Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a 13-episode seventh season, set to air in Summer 2020.
The early pickup is a surprise, to say the least, as the show's fifth season ended the 2017/2018 television year as the network's least-watched drama with just over 2 million total viewers and among the lowest-rated with a measly 0.5 rating. However, while the Live+ same day ratings have been exceedingly poor, the series has always been a strong on-demand performer with delayed viewing, which probably helped its cause.
Deadline adds that the early renewal is linked to the upcoming cast options and that ordering a seventh season this early - along with picking up options for their actors - would allow the network to film both the sixth and seventh seasons back-to-back, significantly reducing costs in the process.
Additionally, it appears that Clark Gregg (Captain Marvel) is no longer listed as a cast member, which is possibly just subterfuge to hide the potential second revival of his fan-favorite character Phil Coulson. Regardless, Gregg has already been confirmed to return as a director in season six, so his time with the show, whether on-screen or off-, is likely far from over.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O’Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.
