Over the past few years, Marvel Television has made it clear that they intend to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a direction orienting towards Young Adult audiences, partnering with ABC Signature studios to create shows like Cloak and Dagger and New Warriors on Freeform, as well as The Runaways for Hulu.
It seems this effort is paying off early, as SpoilerTV is reporting that Freeform has already greenlit a renewal for their upcoming midseason drama, Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, starring Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt in the lead roles. While the report is sparse on details, it does say that the show will be in development from next month to October of this year. From Freeform's speedy pickup of New Warriors following the filming of the Cloak and Dagger pilot, it seems the network is very excited for Marvel's future on the channel, and anticipate a ratings success.
No official word from Marvel or Freeform has come in on whether or not the series has in fact been renewed.
“Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” is an adaptation of the beloved Marvel characters whose story is aimed squarely at young adults. This live-action interracial romance follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart — but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.”
