We're still waiting to find out whether Jon Bernthal will make his MCU debut as The Punisher, but rumours have been swirling for a while that we might see him both in Echo and Daredevil: Born Again.
The actor has made his despite to play Frank Castle again clear on numerous occasions, and while he doesn't comment on that in the interview below, Bernthal does share high praise for Kingpin actor Vincent D'Onofrio. Talking to Sarah Silverman, he reflected on sharing the screen with his co-star in season 2 of Daredevil.
"He’s so like, he’s so, if you are...an antithesis to what we are trying to do, like director, producer, if you are not part of the artistic journey, dude you are the f***ing enemy and he like, lets you know," Bernthal recalled, "I saw him like, just completely crumple Marvel execs on Daredevil."
"It was like great, [I was like] 'you’re my f***ing hero, dude,'" he said of his reaction to seeing D'Onodrio unleash his inner Wilson Fisk. "I try to do s*** like that, but I’m way too nice. I can’t."
We know Marvel Television wasn't exactly the most well-run outfit, and that there were many behind-the-scenes issues for those working on the Netflix TV shows (Peter Shinkoda, for example, has alleged that his role in the series was cut after Jeph Loeb told him "nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people").
Time will tell what Marvel Studios has in store for The Punisher, but the character is one that has proven hard to crack both on the big and small screens.
Bernthal is the closest we've come to a perfect take on the anti-hero, though, and Daredevil: Born Again would be a fantastic opportunity to pair Frank and Matt Murdock up for another adventure.
