Matt Murdock's enhanced hearing gives him the ability to listen to someone's heartbeat and determine whether they're lying or telling the truth. It's an ability that comes in very handy as a public lawyer. However, the blind, Hell's Kitchen lawyer won't be able to use this ability on his old college flame, Elektra Natchios.
Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb shed some new light on Elektra and Daredevil's relationship when the show returns for season 2. The two have a past relationship from Matt's college days but it seems Elektra left Matt behind for mysterious reasons. In season 2, she's back and she's asking Matt for a favor (what that favor is, remains a mystery). Is she one the run from The Hand? Does she need a lawyer? Elektra's motivations should become clear as more promotional material is released in the coming weeks. However, what was revealed about the character at the Winter TCA press tour is that she will challenge Matt to come to grips with why he's wearing a costume at night and fighting criminals. Where season 1 was Matt Murdock's journey to become a hero, season 2 will tackle the question of why he wants to be a hero. What is it that Matt's working towards each and every time he dons the Daredevil costume?
Loeb stated, "I think one of the things that’s dynamic about Elodie’s performance is that you never quite know if Elektra’s telling you the truth. Matt, who has this sort of ability to be a human lie detector, because he’s emotionally attached to her, it skews his ability to be able to know whether or not she’s telling the truth or he’s being manipulated, or is she actually not manipulating him? That kind of interaction, and I think the natural emotion that was going on between Charlie and Elodie that we captured on film, added a great deal of spark to it. Particularly, given that Karen Page is an equally strong and independent woman who has her own story that’s going on throughout the series. As you will watch it unfold, you get very caught up in the push and pull of Matt Murdock’s life."
Daredevil season 2 will begin streaming on Netflix, March 18.
