THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Showrunner Reveals The Alternate Title The Series Nearly Ended With

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier wrapped up by revealing a new title: Captain America and The Winter Soldier. However, Bucky very nearly received a totally different moniker for that title card...

After travelling to Wakanda and living among its people, Bucky was given the "White Wolf" moniker. His Wakandan name only got a handful of throwaway mentions in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but many fans have wondered why the series didn't wrap up with a title card reading "Captain America and The White Wolf" rather than "Captain America and The Winter Soldier."

Even going with "Captain America and Bucky" would have surely made more sense than the fully recovered HYDRA assassin still calling himself The Winter Soldier, but showrunner Malcolm Spellman has now confirmed that they did consider an alternate title card for the Disney+ series.

"I got to see that moniker [White Wolf] in watching one of the cuts, and man, it really affected me emotionally," he admitted. "The reason [the closing title card] still says The Winter Soldier is solely based on Marvel feeling like they needed to keep some of the original title in there to land that feeling. I don’t think it had anything to do with where Bucky is going or how Bucky evolved."

"I think that they felt like if they went too far away from the original title, you wouldn’t feel the impact of those words. Again, I’m speculating here, but I believe they wanted the impact of Captain America and the Winter Soldier to land. And I do think that had they done Captain America and the White Wolf, it might not have been as emotional of a landing because it’s too much math and too much evolution. I got blindsided by that while watching the cut - but I loved it."

It's easy to see where Spellman is coming from here, especially as the whole "White Wolf" moniker really hasn't been fully established in the MCU and may have confused a lot of viewers when it showed up on screen. Bucky has emerged as a superhero who has managed to overcome his past transgressions, so perhaps he's making "Winter Soldier" his own?

Either way, the title was clearly decided on by Kevin Feige if "Captain America and The Winter Soldier" took Spellman by surprise. What are your thoughts on the show's name change?

White Wolf wouldn't have really made sense in my opinion, since Ayo tells Bucky to stay away from Wakanda for a while.

Winter Soldier does fit though, since he completeled the book I got the idea he accepted the Winter Soldier is part of who he is.

It should have said

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

and then it changes into

Captain America and Bucky

But maybe that's just me

@SpaceAgent - Or Captain America And Sargent Barnes.

I like how it sounds.

I love him being called White Wolf, though I still call him Winter Soldier first. But they made the right choice. Seeing it say Captain America, as well as just knowing that they're friends now, was just what we needed to see there to make us smile.

I don't like White Wolf there, but I would have liked for it to read Captain America and Bucky Barnes or maybe Sergeant Bucky Barnes?

I get what he's saying, though. Too much change and it doesn't read as an evolution (at least to some people at a glance). It's "too much math", as he said.

@Spock0Clock - Spot on. And I actually really love that term too much math. Makes total sense.

2014 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2021 - Captain America and The Winter Soldier

@WakandanQueen - Was literally just about to comment this same observation! Love it

@WakandanQueen - Exactly

@WakandanQueen - at that point
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND SARGENT BARNES was much more appropriate.

Unfortunately, Bucky was just there to serve the story of Sam becoming Cap.

Yeah good choice with the final product. Still don’t think the White Wolf moniker will show up again anytime soon.

I would’ve liked a Captain America and Bucky, but I see why they might’ve gone with what they did.

The contrast--only changing one aspect--does drive the concept home much better.

Lets see Bucky evolve INTO the White Wolf just as we watched him evolve OUT of being Winter Soldier. God willing we will all get to see these plans play out on our TV and movie screens.

A ‘Black Panther-ish’ costume in a white and gold wolf motif with his black and gold vibranium arm exposed would be sick AF and would be equally striking next to Cap’s red white and blue.

And its so weird...Sam’s costume is WAY more “red, white and blue” than any of Steve’s suits. The awkward Avenger’s suit is the only one to come close to the use of the bright red and blue. Everything else was muted reds and blues with a dull grey instead of bright white.

Still doesn’t make sense why they ended it with “Winter Soldier,” which basically amounts to Hydra’s slave name for Bucky.

He definitely should have had a name change. His progression was just as much as Cap's. By finishing that book, I think he has earned the right to drop the WS and go by just Bucky. And in Cap 4 he can pick up the moniker of "White Wolf".

Ayo's scene in Wakanda was easily one of the most powerful of the whole series. Really hope she has a greatly expanded role in Black Panther and season 2.

@parkerray - "I won't let you hurt anyone." How could there be a more perfectly concise encapsulation or thematic line of dialogue, fiercely beautiful.
