HAWKEYE Director Rhys Thomas Talks Possible Season 2 Plans And ROGERS: THE MUSICAL Mid-Credits Scene

Hawkeye finale director Rhys Thomas has revealed whether he's heard anything about season 2 plans for the Disney+ series, while also explaining the thought process behind the Rogers: The Musical stinger...

There's been something of a mixed response to Hawkeye's mid-credits scene. Rather than setting the stage for a future story, we instead got the full-length version of "I Can Do This All Day" from Rogers: The Musical - a fun Christmas treat, but not exactly what most of us were hoping for.

During a recent interview with Collider, director Rhys Thomas (who helmed the first, second, and sixth episodes of Hawkeye) revealed whether he's heard of any season 2 plans and if there were any conversations about teasing the future of these characters in any way in a stinger.

"I cannot speak to future plans in the tradition of secrecy. Again, the show coming out, you never know how it's going to be received and it has been amazing to see how warmly people have taken it and enjoyed it," he explained. "And it's been great to see Hailee's character embraced and sort of land so firmly in the MCU. I sincerely look forward to where that character goes next. And yes, I loved walking on the streets of the MCU and would gladly enjoy doing it again."

Thomas went on to explain that he wasn't aware of the mid-credits scene revisiting Rogers: The Musical and admitted to being curious whether one would be adding to set the stage for something else. The filmmaker admitted he was a tad conflicted about that as, like most fans, he expected something related to what comes next. However, Marvel Studios wanted to keep it light.

"In all fairness again, to the team, it's like, no, no, no, it's Christmas, it's light. We've got so much blood in this episode, it's just fun. It's a fun release at the end, and it's a nice way to send people off," Thomas says. "That's how that came about and in terms of what it was, that was part of... Obviously, when we shot it for Episode 1, we shot the entire thing, but obviously in Episode 1, the focus was Jeremy and less of the performance. It was [an] evolution of that."

Loki ended with the announcement of a season 2, while it wasn't long after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier wrapped up that we heard of plans for Captain America 4. With that in mind, we expect some clarification over future plans for both Clint Barton and Kate Bishop sooner rather than later.

How whiny and entitled fans can be these days. I almost hope the writers continue to disappoint you.

The musical mid credits scene was shit. Even the director knows it.

@BlackBeltJones - It was just a showcase and early head start for next year's Best Original Song nominations. Sadly, this song...yeah...no.

I absolutely love this song. It totally nails the aesthetic and sounds of the Broadway Musical. I can totally imagine this as being the first act showstopper right before the intermission.

I notice a lot, a whole lot of the fans on here hate the Broadway Musical added to the end. Personally, I didn't hate it or love it, just took it for what it was. What I really found myself doing while watching it when I realized that was all it was going to be, was to think about the time and energy the team had to put in to make that come off at all. It really did feel or reek if you will of an actual Broadway show. I wasn't butt hurt behind it at all.

@Mugens - Not a big musical fan either, and I kinda wish the after-credits thing had been more substantial, but I don't mind it either.
If anything, the musical adds some worldbuilding.

Loved the series. Loved Kate and Clint. Loved the spirit of the show.

The only D+ show so far that I would rewatch.

The larpers and the musical were lame. I almost wished the Swordmaster would’ve sung another song instead, but they probably would’ve just added it to the musical.

@TheWalkingCuban - those were the weakest parts of the series.

@Nunyabiz - right I have a sense of humor but there’s funny and there’s cute. I feel like they’re going for cute. I feel… you know what I think this article confirms, that they’re going for a kid level of humor. As a 39 year old watching superheroes I don’t suppose I can complain but we’re going from Jackson pollock to “don’t you have your own arrow bag?” And lemme tell ya. I have kids. They watched Liv and Maddie and other Disney shows, that were WAY, WAY funnier. So maybe I don’t know what’s going on here.

And maybe these shows just suck at humor.

I don’t think we’re getting a Season 2 to any of these D+ shows (outside of What-If). I think these shows were supposed to introduce lesser known characters to the general public without having to give them a theatrical origin story. Now Marvel can do a Young Avengers movie/series event and only has to tell the origin story of possibly Patriot who has already been introduced.

@Nunyabiz - as a scene I thought the musical after credits was awesome. But it was a little disappointing, as it always is, when the after credit scene is just a big joke, because we’ve been conditioned to expect/hope for a teaser for future projects

Remember when someone kept reporting that Jeremy Renner was getting fired and replaced? whatever happened to the guy that kept reporting that? He should read this article

@DarkeyeZ - I missed that, but it's probably because I blocked him. Once in a while, someone here will state something like Marvel Studios is sinking and won't last long, etc., and I just block them so I don't have to read their ignorant bullshit anymore.

Blocking them helps make reading comments more enjoyable and saves me more time.

I could see Clint return for a cameo here and there, but not really to the superhero business altogether. Next project for Kate is hopefully a Young Avengers or a Hawkeye and Black Widow project with Yelena (and maybe Cassie)
LSHF
LSHF - 12/26/2021, 1:15 PM
@bkmeijer - That makes sense, especially since I keep getting the impression that Clint and his family want him to retire.

It'll take a little while, but people will eventually turn on Hawkeye and actually realize how bad the show was. It just takes some longer than others to vocalize it.
