NEVER HAVE I EVER Star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Explains Why She Won't Play Kamala Khan In MS. MARVEL

Since teen drama Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix, star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has become a fan-favourite choice to play Ms. Marvel. However, the actress now explains why that's not going to happen.

Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan delivers a standout performance in Netflix's Never Have I Ever, and has since been touted on social media as the perfect candidate to take on the role of Kamala Khan in the Ms. Marvel TV series coming to Disney+. However, the 18-year-old actress has now explained why it wouldn't be "fair" for her to play the Inhuman hero in the MCU.

"I've seen a couple of posts about that, but honestly, no. Kamala Khan is Pakistani and I'm Tamil," the Canadian-Tamil actress told ET. "If there was a Tamil superhero, I wouldn't want to see a Pakistani girl playing [her]. I would say, 'Really? You couldn't find anybody who was Tamil?' So why would I want to do that to the Pakistani community? That wouldn't be fair."

Ramakrishnan didn't dismiss the notion of joining a comic book franchise, though, as she joked about potentially starring in Deadpool 3

"Trust me, I'd love to be a superhero. I love Marvel so much. I could be the daughter of Deadpool or his apprentice or something. Maybe Deadpool adopts a South Asian girl. It would make sense — Ryan Reynolds and I would both make the Canadian jokes."

Interestingly, Never Have I Ever co-creator Mindy Kaling has previously expressed interest in working on Ms. Marvel, and while it's a shame Ramakrishnan isn't interested in playing Kamala Khan, her attitude is completely understandable.

What are your thoughts on Ramakrishnan's comments? Are you disappointed that she won't take on the role of Kamala Khan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let us know your thoughts down below.

That's cool. I really hope Marvel does stay true to that. Hollywood kind of has a reputation of tossing South-Asian actors at Middle Eastern roles. (Looking at you, Aladdin) That said, I honestly would have been wary of her in the part regardless, she was the weak link of Never Have I Ever, IMO.

That's right. Representation matters.

@azimiq - do you feel that way about all ethnicities? Because all sorts of people can be cast in all sorts of roles.

@azimiq - No, representation is simply a desirable quality. It's talent that matters.

@Ryguy88 - I feel that way about ethnicities who haven't been represented correctly in film.

@azimiq - treating groups of people differently based on their ethnicity is a slippery slope.

Totally understandbale & respectable response.

When writers / creators here stuff like this from actors / actresses they should then get on the ball & their thinking caps on to CREATE more represenative characters IN comics.

Someone make up a Tamil Female hero she could play.

And hoepfully the right Eyes from Marvel Studios hear or see about this story & cast the right Pakistani actress for Kamala.

Eh, Kumail Nanjiani is already playing an Indian character in The Eternals despite being Pakistani, I think it'd be fine.

Much respect for sticking up for her Tamil ethnicity. Minority races aren't a monolith. There are different kinds of black people, Hispanic people, Latin people, Asian people etc that are all different and have different cultures, languages and experiences. We say we should cast accurately to the character, and that's exactly what she's suggesting. It's partially why I'm so glad that Shang-Chi cast Chinese actors for Chinese characters.
