While the vast majority of Marvel stars tend to go through a grueling audition process, fan-favorite actress Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Once Upon a Time) was one of the lucky ones and was cast as Wanda's frenemy "Dottie" in WandaVision by head writer Jac Schaeffer, a longtime friend of Caulfield's who also directed her in the 2009 sci-fi/romantic comedy TiMER.
However, she did still need to get an official seal of approval from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
"We’ve been friends ever since we worked together on that film and we’ve been trying to find something to work together on since that time and nothing really presented itself and then, she was in charge of this show and created this world for Marvel and she asked if I wanted to come play. It was really just that cool and that simple. I did have to get approved by Kevin Feige, but there was no gauntlet auditioning crazy process, it wasn’t like that. It was just a nice call between friends that finally worked out."
While that story is amazing in itself, an equally remarkable part is that her casting was one of the few that didn't leak over the course of the past year even after she was spotted on set in full costume, which she found quite amusing.
"I don’t know how that happened, it did not and there were photos of me leaked as well in costume, but everyone thought I was Scarlett Johansson (*laughs*), so no one’s caught on yet, so I guess I’ll just keep quiet. It was funny."
Considering her ties to Schaeffer and the mystery stemming from her character's first interaction with Wanda, it's fair to wonder whether there could be more to "Dottie" than meets the eye. For now, we'll just have to wait and see as Caulfield didn't drop any hints about what's to come.
On another note, it sounds like despite already being a part of massive shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Once Upon a Time and experiencing all that comes with it, she still found herself completely blown away by the magnitude of Marvel Studios and the sheer magic they're able to produce day-in and day-out.
"It’s unlike anything, I don’t even know, it’s like going to another planet. It is like literally stepping - if Marvel were a planet, it would be like going to Mars, but Mars fully developed and littered with glitter and gold, like just a funhouse where anything is possible. Anything like, ‘What do you want? Got it!’ It is literally unlike anything, I never thought I would be working on a Marvel project ever, so I’m thrilled that I am and very happy that Jac called me and very happy that Kevin liked me."
