WHAT IF...ZOMBIES?! Delivers An Unexpectedly Twisted Take On A Classic MCU Love Story - SPOILERS

Today's episode of What If...? was titled "What If...Zombies?!" so you'd best believe it took us to some crazy places. Now, we're breaking down that big twist and how things ended for the surviving heroes.

We certainly have a lot to unpack after watching today's episode of What If...?, and the animated series does a pretty incredible job of taking that "Marvel Zombies" concept from the comic books and making it work in the context of the MCU - but there's one element of this instalment that lands quite a bit harder than anything we saw on the page (especially after WandaVision).

When some of the surviving heroes respond to a signal coming from Camp Leigh, they find The Vision. It turns out that the Mind Stone is emitting a frequency that repels the undead, and the android has actually been able to cure both Scott Lang and T'Challa.

However, he's only done so because it means he can feed the women he loves: Wanda Maximoff. Her powers are preventing Vision from curing her like the others, so he's been luring people to him so he can sustain his zombie bride. He's even been feeding pieces of T'Challa to her, and to call this the MCU's most twisted love story ever would be an understatement.

Ultimately, Vision sees the errors of his ways and repents by tearing the Mind Stone from his head. That gives the heroes a chance to cure everyone, but what they don't know is that an undead Thanos is waiting for them in Wakanda (and he only needs one more Infinity Stone...).

That's quite the cliffhanger, and one we're definitely hoping is addressed in What If...? season 2.

Unfortunately, something tells us things don't end well for Spider-Man, Scott Lang, and Black Panther, but this is definitely a concept Marvel Studios needs to consider revisiting at some point.

Yeah this was another big misstep here. It was just way too joke filled given the subject matter. The only death given any emotional weight behind it is hope's, even though she's the one who caused all this to happen in the first place.

@Origame - I wouldn't call it a misstep, but Marvel does have an annoying way of undercutting meaningful drama with jokes. Jokes that are often not even funny.

@Origame - Whenever I see/hear/watch these jokes that undercut serious subject matter, I always think "Disney" (not "Marvel").

Disney knows that children are watching their MCU films, and probably want to lesson the odds of any of them experiencing sadness (except for Infinity War) and having nightmares (since humor helps us digest horrible things; see episodes of M*A*S*H, as the main character, Hawkeye, almost continuously makes jokes about the nightmare around him).

I'm not saying Marvel/Kevin wouldn't keep doing the same thing if Disney didn't care, BUT I know that Disney "does" care and doesn't want to alienate their family audience).

@LSHF - I mean, if that's the case then they probably shouldn't have a scene of hope exploding a zombie by going inside it and growing back to normal size. Or heck, most of the visuals here. A lot of beloved superheroes are killed and zombified here.

@LSHF - preventing a child from experiencing sadness or any kind of sentiment will only backfire later on. It's actually worse than giving them a one night nightmare.

I wish the tone was similar to last week's episode.. should have kept the jokes exclusive to Ant-Man. This was a perfect opportunity for a serious Spider-man.. I liked it anyway.

NGL, I'm not too crazy with the Zombie craze, but I was hoping to see a Zombified Hulk

I like this episode but I don’t think I love it for 2 reasons.
1) I’m not a Zombie person. I don’t watch Zombie movies, I never watched The Walking Dead (don’t ask) or any other zombie related tv shows so I’m not gonna get any references.
2) One of my nitpicks with this show as a whole is that it’s too fast paced at times and it definitely shows here. Everyone feels like they’re talking too fast and wanna get the story over with. I understand because of the 30 minutes running but why could they just make these episodes longer? A lot of tv shows have like a 45 minutes running time counting out commercial breaks but I don’t understand why it’s a big no no for cartoons or at least cartoons of this caliber? Or they could at least make them two parters like the Justice League cartoon or when they did those story arcs on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

@tb86 - I'm not a Zombie person either, but enjoy a good zombie movie. That said I think there's sort a fanaticism growing with the Marvel fan base, if there wasn't already. It's not Star Wars bad, another franchise I love, but sometimes I feel it's inevitably headed in that direction. I enjoy everything Marvel does for what it is. I guess I'm just one of those few that are just happy to be in the golden age of comics, on screen anyway. I don't really take them too seriously. Anything could always be better, but I don't think what they've done so far is egregiously bad. I agree 45 minutes is probably better for these shows, but it's also mostly uncharted territory for all of these D+ shows. I think the story dictates the pacing as well. I don't think everything needs closure either. I don't like that we're in a world where everything needs to be fleshed out. It really doesn't, a little mystique never hurts anything. A thing isn't beautiful because it lasts and the show is called What If after all.

It really hit me in this episode that they've managed to go this far while focusing mostly on their 2nd tier characters. That's really been a cool added element to this, seeing characters like Yondu, Hope, Peggy and even Hank Pym get some extra exploration

Didn't even catch the WandaVision flip in this episode until now
