WHAT IF...? Easter Egg Seemingly Confirms Who Killed [SPOILER] In The Latest Episode

The latest episode of What If...? followed a killer who set out to murder Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but a newly discovered Easter Egg may explain who set that character on their mission of vengeance...

In "What If...The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?", we visited a reality where Hank Pym had been overcome with grief after the death of his daughter, Hope. She'd signed up to join S.H.I.E.L.D. years after her mother's death and was killed in action; Hank, meanwhile, suited up as Yellow Jacket and killed Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, The Hulk, and Black Widow to end the Avengers Initiative.

However, an exchange between Nick Fury and Hank in the closing moments of What If...? has revealed an Easter Egg that seemingly confirms who was responsible for Hope's death.

Noting that she died on a mission "outside Odessa, Ukraine," Fury doesn't elaborate on what happened beyond that, but some have remembered a conversation between Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff in Captain America: The Winter Soldier in which she recalled crossing paths with The Winter Soldier (a.k.a. Bucky Barnes) after he "shot out [her] tires near Odessa."

The HYDRA-controlled Bucky then "shot [his target] straight through [her]," and while Black Widow survived that encounter, Hope obviously wasn't quite so lucky.

This is an interesting twist, and it's a shame in some ways that this episode of What If...? didn't better explain the one event that changed this reality. However, doing so would have obviously spoiled the big reveal that Hank was the one doing the killing, so we can't fault the series too much!

Did you catch this Captain America: The Winter Soldier Easter Egg in What If...?

@Reeds2Much - To be honest, ScarLo's mid section could look like swiss cheese and I'd still want to see it in a bikini. But then I like cheese on everything, so maybe that's just me.

Since I've seen others point it out, I guess that is the best explanation. No way that's a coincidence.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this episode and look forward to next week. Wonder what episode we'll be getting next though. I guess we have the evil Strange, party Thor, Killmonger, zombies, Gamora and Utron-Vision episodes left.

@bkmeijer - Gamora, Killmonger or Party Thor. I think they're saving Evil Strange, Zombie Avengers and Ultron-Vision for the end.

@KanchaCheena - if the Gamora episode is a follow-up to the Star-Lord episode (which I doubt), I think they might wait a little with that

Josh still doesn’t know that seemingly confirms doesn’t mean anything. Makes me cringe every time I see him do it

Man, this connection was made hours after the episode aired, and this tweet itself is 4 days old... slow news day.

Hank's motivation for killing the...pre-Avengers, was still incredibly weak and forced. Why wouldn't he have just gone after Fury, in the first place? Whatever.😂 Black Widow was awesome!

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - It is kinda a Marvel tradition that Hank Pym is not a mentally stable person and will always fall to the deep end over any amount of stress.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - well he did say he wanted Fury see everything crumble Fury worked so hard for. And I guess that relates to the Avengers Inititiave

@FinnishDude - Yea I felt that was pretty clear both from how they animated Hank's face to the fact that he was wearing the Yellowjacket armor. This was clearly an allusion to the history he has with losing in the comics

Completely off topic here, but I have a question for the older crowd here.

About 6 or 7 years ago, there was a user on this site called Nova Fan. He used to make these really long, detailed articles predicting how the MCU would move forward.

Mind you, the MCU was still in its infancy, so his theories were way off the mark, but it was always really fun reading his articles.

Whatever happened to him (and the articles)?

@FortWaba - don't remember that in particular, but I do wonder what happened to fan-fic on this site. Whole tab just dissappeared

@bjmeijer - Ah @NovaCorpsFan WOW. Personally, I don't know what happened to them, but like you, I too enjoyed their theories.

Here's his profile:
https://www.comicbookmovie.com/user/NovaCorpsFan

You won't find much on it due the changes to the site messing up a lot of things. However, if you search up his name on the search function, you'll find a lot of his past articles. Also, try the wayback machine. But the search function is easier.

This reminds of @BlackBeltJones's write ups. I really miss those too. Have you thought of doing more? They were so detailed and with some really cool ideas for how the MCU should move forward. I guess it must be down to time, eh?
