Netflix has finally released a full trailer for the second season of its acclaimed animated steampunk sci-fi series, Arcane.
Good news for fans of the show, but we do also have some bad: Arcane will not return for a third season.
This doesn't mean that we won't see more stories set in the League of Legends universe, however.
“Arcane is just the beginning of our larger storytelling journey and partnership with the wonderful animation studio that is Fortiche,” said co-creator Christian Linke in a statement. “From the very beginning, since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of ‘Arcane’ wraps up with this second season. But Arcane is just the first of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra.”
The series is co-created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, and follows the origins of League champions and sisters Vi and Jinx, as they become caught in the power struggle between the utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun.
The first season concluded with Jinx, aka Powder, launching an attack on the Piltover council, and it looks like season 2 is going to pick up directly after these events, as we build towards a final showdown between Jinx and Vi.
Check out the trailer below.
Season 2's voice cast includes Hailee Steinfeld (Vi), Ella Purnell (Jinx), Katie Leung (Caitlyn), Reed Shannon (Ekko), Amirah Vann (Sevika), Mick Wingert (Heimerdinger), Ellen Thomas (Ambessa), and Brett Tucker (Singed) among others to be announced.
The show is executive produced by Linke, Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck. The Animation Studio is Fortiche Animation.
Season 1 earned four Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022, including Outstanding Animated Program – the first streaming series to win in that category. The series also swept the 2022 Annie Awards with wins in nine categories including Best TV/Media, Best Writing, Best Voice Acting (Ella Purnell), Best Direction, Best Production Design, Best Character Animation, Best Storyboarding, Best Character Design and Best FX. The series was recognized by the gaming community, winning Best Adaptation at The Game Awards (2022). In addition, the Arcane album was nominated for a 2022 Billboard Music Award for Top Soundtrack.
"Arcane tells the origin story of two iconic League of Legends champions, who just so happen to be sisters. Jinx (Ella Purnell) — also known as Powder — and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) find themselves on rival sides of a brewing war between the utopian city Piltover and its oppressed underbelly Zaun. Powder and Vi are completely transformed by the end of the first season, as Powder becomes the mischievous Jinx and Vi proves she’s one champion you don’t want to mess with."
Arcane returns for its second and final season this November.
