Though billion dollar box office earners, the first two installments in the new Star Wars trilogy have left a little something to be desired. As such, Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Star Wars movies are going into hiatus after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. That means you'll have to wait a bit for the Kevin Feige Star Wars film or Rian Johnson's trilogy, and the trilogy focusing on the origin of the Jedi order from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss appears to be dead in the water.
So after the release of Episode IX on December 20, the live-action division of Star Wars will have to make do with the The Mandalorian season finale on December 27 and a recently confirmed season 2. Sure, there's a Cassian-Andor series in the works along with an Untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi show, but who knows how far along in development they are. So if The Mandalorian proves to be a success that drives Disney+ subscriptions and is universally adored by fans and critics alike, could it turn into a film or film series?
Speaking at the Variety Business Managers Breakfast at the Montage Beverly Hills, Disney co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn was asked about this prospect.
"The Mandalorian’ is already proving to be a big thing, so if that series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K."
The series is still very much in the early stages, but imagine if only the first episode was released on Disney+ and then the story continued from there as a film? As crazy as that sounds, that's more or less what Marvel is doing with characters like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight who have already been confirmed to appear in MCU films after their respective series wrap.
