Disney Co-Chairman On The Chances Of THE MANDALORIAN Making The Hyperspace Jump From Television To Film

Disney Co-Chairman On The Chances Of THE MANDALORIAN Making The Hyperspace Jump From Television To Film

The Mandalorian is only one episode in, but that hasn't stopped Disney/Lucasfilm from thinking about all the possibilities for Jon Favreau's series (which could soon become the face of the franchise).

Though billion dollar box office earners, the first two installments in the new Star Wars trilogy have left a little something to be desired. As such, Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Star Wars movies are going into hiatus after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. That means you'll have to wait a bit for the Kevin Feige Star Wars film or Rian Johnson's trilogy, and the trilogy focusing on the origin of the Jedi order from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss appears to be dead in the water.

So after the release of Episode IX on December 20, the live-action division of Star Wars will have to make do with the The Mandalorian season finale on December 27 and a recently confirmed season 2. Sure, there's a Cassian-Andor series in the works along with an Untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi show, but who knows how far along in development they are. So if The Mandalorian proves to be a success that drives Disney+ subscriptions and is universally adored by fans and critics alike, could it turn into a film or film series?

Speaking at the Variety Business Managers Breakfast at the Montage Beverly Hills, Disney co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn was asked about this prospect.

"The Mandalorian’ is already proving to be a big thing, so if that series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K."

The series is still very much in the early stages, but imagine if only the first episode was released on Disney+ and then the story continued from there as a film? As crazy as that sounds, that's more or less what Marvel is doing with characters like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight who have already been confirmed to appear in MCU films after their respective series wrap.

The problem with that is you run the risk of people not watching the shows and giving it awful reviews because they forgot that the movie is based off the show.

@SonOfAGif - She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel are about to do the very same thing.

It could definitely surprise me, but I'm not interested at all in a whole series for Cassian Andor. I enjoyed Rogue One a lot, I think it portrayed the old Star Wars world best until Mandalorian was released. But those characters had a great purpose in a standalone movie, idk what they can come up with for him to do that won't feel generic or tacked on. Also may have a droid overdose with K2SO. Maybe prioritize that Obi-Wan series because I cannot wait to see Ewan back in the role with a lightsaber and a Disney+ budget.

Stop trying to rush Star Wars.

I mean okay. Are they going to add scenes or something? Or just to allow people who don’t want to pay the 7 dollars to watch the show the opportunity to pay 10 dollars to watch the movie?

Definitely not needed, it’s fine as a show. I’m not against characters from the show showing up in a future movie, but we don’t need a continuation of the show as a film.

They made the mistake by not making Solo into a series, and in my opinion they shouldnt try to make a series into a movie either
