THE MANDALORIAN Season 3 Premiere Viewership Dips But Talk Of STAR WARS Fatigue Is Premature

Unofficial viewership data for The Mandalorian's season 3 premiere has been revealed, and while the show has taken a hit after a two-year absence, it's far too soon to write it off as franchise fatigue.

The Mandalorian finally returned to Disney+ earlier this month more than two years after the season 2 finale dropped on the streaming service.

The Book of Boba Fett helped fill the gap, of course, but that spin-off paled in comparison and was at its best when Din Djarin and Grogu showed up. Now, there are concerns about Star Wars fatigue after The Wrap (via SFFGazette.com) recently shared updated viewership trends from Samba TV.

They measure around 3 million U.S. households through more than 25 million TVs, so while this is a small percentage of Disney+ users (and pretty much nothing compared to the number of global subscribers), the figures still offer an idea of the level of interest in shows.

According to the trade, while "The Apostate" outpaced Andor's premiere by nearly 50% in terms of viewership, it fell short of Obi-Wan Kenobi by 28%.

Disaster, right?

Not really. For starters, The Mandalorian is now in its third season and it's typical for any TV show to lose viewers over time. That huge gap between seasons certainly won't have helped matters, but comparing this series to Obi-Wan Kenobi is borderline ridiculous when that series was literally years in the making and featured huge name characters from the Star Wars franchise.

So, while there may be an element of Star Wars fatigue here, we're really not sweating The Mandalorian's future. Showrunner Jon Favreau has already said that he has long-term plans for the series, with the story of Din Djarin and Grogu being one he imagines lasting indefinitely.

"Still the best Star Wars TV show," we said in our review of the first two episodes, "The Mandalorian returns with everything fans love about the franchise and plenty of hints that this will be the most thrilling and revealing season yet. We’re ready for that Bo-Katan Kryze spin-off."

Have you been tuning into The Mandalorian this year?

They have 100m subscribers and they can only manage to get a measly 3m views.. meanwhile TLOU gets 8 million with waaaay less subscribers lol. I'm still enjoying it, but the numbers don't add up

Is it fair to say that the marketing campaign for most Disney+ shows are not great?Obviously I will know when something is out as I am always online and are in that world, however for someone like my Dad. His reaction to it being released was "wow, I didn't even know this was out today"

@Pezza524 - Totally agree. They are relying too much on mouth to mouth marketing, and at this point, many fans are no longer interested on what they usually offer, so they won't pull non-fans to the screens and subscriptions no more.

I am liking Mando S3 so far, but I can see some of my friends who watched previous seasons getting out because of The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan...

@JayBarrick - Sadly enough, some of them didn't even try on Andor, wich was top notch quality streaming...

@JayBarrick - same issue with Netflix though at least Netflix hits tend to do better than 3m

Actually this is horrible news for Disney. They have effectively killed all hype for SW and have destroyed the story of Star Wars which has made these shows pointless to watch. SW is chapters 1-6 with clone wars to fill gap between 3 and 4 and maybe add in Rogue One and Rebels. It's the story of how the empire rose and then fell and about the characters that were the main reason why. Any deviation from that is not servicing the story or the characters.

We followed the leaders and the heroes of the Rebellion and the leaders of the Empire we didn't follow the grunts and the low-level officers because none of that adds to the story at hand. Mando was adding to the story by focusing on the aftermath of the war in 1st season and then caught us up with some of the main SW characters in season 2, no idea what season 3 is adding to the story. If it's just here to bridge the gap between Lucas and Disney SW and the sequels then it is a dead-end story that is nothing more than a lame prequel to a story and characters that sucks.

These viewing numbers will continue to fall and they are not adding new fans only losing the ones they had.
