The Mandalorian Season 4 "Was About Thrawn" And Set Up Ahsoka Season 2, Confirms Filmmaker Jon Favreau

The Mandalorian and Grogu director Jon Favreau has revealed his scrapped plans for The Mandalorian Season 4, which included putting the spotlight on Grand Admiral Thrawn ahead of Ahsoka's return.

When Bob Iger returned as Disney CEO, he prioritised box office revenue over boosting Disney+ subscription numbers by pulling the plug on his predecessor's seemingly endless streaming offerings.

With that, a planned Moana TV series became the theatrically released Moana 2. Much has also been said about The Mandalorian Season 4 evolving into The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie that arrives in theaters next month following a three-year absence for the show.

While the series hadn't started shooting yet, the prevailing belief among Star Wars fans seems to be that filmmaker Jon Favreau was tasked with taking his Season 4 scripts and condensing 8 episodes into a 2-hour movie.

Not so. While the entire season had been written, Favreau went back to the drawing board to tell a vastly different story from the one he had planned for streaming.

"You can't just take those scripts and turn them into a movie," he told SFX (via SFFGazette.com). "There were a lot of characters, it assumed you'd watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline]."

"This is a completely different medium," Favreau continued, "so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian's apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you've never seen the show."

"But there's still a lot of Star Wars in there," the writer and director added. "You're going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn't diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film."

It's hard not to wonder what might have been, and the idea of Din Djarin and The Child dealing with a returning Grand Admiral Thrawn and his undead army of Stormtroopers—assuming that's where things were heading—is undeniably exciting.

Now, the duo will be kept separate from whatever Dave Filoni has planned for Ahsoka Season 2, though the door may be open for them to make a cameo appearance in the Disney+ series. We wouldn't bank on it, though, because it seems that Disney's hope is for The Mandalorian and Grogu to launch a new big-screen franchise.

In The Mandalorian and Grogu, the evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie also stars Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White. It's produced by Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce,  with music composed by Ludwig Göransson.

The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters on May 22. Check out a new poster for the movie below.

@MotherGooseUPus - Imagine how excited people would be for this if Grogu was off training since the end of Season 2 and this was his big return...

...if Boba Fett hadn't immediately backtracked on the end of Season 2, and if Season 3 actually tried to resolve the Gideon/Mandalore plot with meaningful ramifications.

You know...When the movie was announced, I expected an Avengers level type of movie involving all Star Wars TV series characters with Thrawn as the villain

@BlackStar25 - I’m pretty sure that’s suppose to be Filoni’s film because it was announced as the culmination of the Mandoverse up until that point atleast.

However who knows if it’s happening , especially with him being co-president of Lucasfilm now.

@BlackStar25 - You mean Filoni? He IS directing an Heir to the Empire film after Ahsoka S2 I think.

Favreau has previously said they had written the scripts for The Mandalorian season 4 and were prepping to go into production when the Disney higher ups came to him & asked if he wanted to do a movie instead (likely due to Iger’s pivot from streaming back to theatrical such as he did with Moana 2)…

However instead of Moana 2 which pretty much condensed a show into a movie , he wrote the script for this film from scratch and given he has said they could do a possible season 4 , I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually go back to those scripts and do that albeit with changes here & there of course.

I can understand though why Favreau made it more standalone since he’s said he hopes to appeal to people and/or kids that haven’t seen the show but might think the movie looks fun so hopefully that intention is successful but we’ll see.

Anyway , I think the film seems enjoyable so looking forward to checking it out!!.

How much was the tax break from the obliteration of S04?

I really hope this movie does well so that we get more stories. Whether you like it or not, the Mandalorian has been the best Star Wars live action since Revenge of the Sith. I also love Ahsoka so I'm hoping we're going in the right direction :)

I love Star Wars, and even I can see the writing on the wall that this movie is going to under perform. Mando was best as a stand-alone TV serial focusing on the Man-with-no-Name styled Western vibe. The plot was massively detailed when Filoni got involved and started tying it to the wider Star Wars universe. Don’t get me wrong, I also really enjoy Filoni‘s stuff (Clone Wars, Rebels, Ahsoka), and am excited for what he has planned to bridge the gap between the post ROTJ era and the (terrible) sequel trilogy with the next season of Ahsoka and his Heir to the Empire movie (if it doesn’t get canceled). I’m hoping he can backfill in the right context to improve a lot of the plot holes and general nonsense of those movies, similarly to how his work on the Clone Wars retroactively improved the story of the Prequels (though I think he has a much more difficult task ahead of himself if he hopes to do the same with the Sequels). I fear the Mandalorian and Grogu movie flopping is going to be a death sentence for these characters, and they’ll be shelved (maybe popping up as supporting characters in other Star Wars media, but in all likely hood their story will probably conclude in a novel or comic that virtually no one will read). The idea that this movie is going to spawn a new film franchise is crazy/laughable, and if we’re very very lucky we will might get that 4th season eventually if this does okay at box office, but I’m not holding my breath. Mando, you will be missed 🫡
