OBI-WAN KENOBI Once Featured Commander Cody Living With Ben On Tatooine As Luke Skywalker's Guardian

An earlier version of Obi-Wan Kenobi was going to feature Clone Commander Cody living with Ben on Tatooine, with him ultimately serving as Luke Skywalker's guardian in the Jedi Master's unexpected absence.

Obi-Wan Kenobi underwent some significant changes when it went from movie to TV show, though Lucasfilm kept many of original writer Stuart Beattie's ideas. The six-part series was still vastly different in a lot of ways, but it sounds like much of the story played out similarly on the small screen as it would have on the big one.

Talking to The Direct (via SFFGazette.com), the writer has now revealed one significant difference that many fans might be disappointed to learn didn't make it to Disney+. That was a key role for Temuera Morrison as Clone Commander Cody, one of Obi-Wan's closest allies during The Clone Wars (who turned on him during Order 66 before helping to enslave the Wookies on Kashyyyk.

"I love the idea of Obi-Wan having a buddy on Tatooine. The first time he goes into town, you see Cody and he’s following him through the streets and attacks him, takes him into an alley with a knife to his throat, and says, 'You’re dead,'" Beattie reveals. "And then you realize, 'Oh, no...Cody’s making a point.' Like, 'Come on. You got to be more careful.'"

"You realize, 'Oh, Cody has now morphed from someone who was trying to kill him when we last saw them to someone who is now devoting his life to protect him,'" he continues. "Because by now he’s had the biochip taken out of his head, and he realizes, 'Oh my god, what I did was wrong.' And he has driven by guilt, as much as Obi Wan is driven by guilt."

Describing the bickering friends as being akin to an old married couple, Beattie would go on to confirm that Cody was set to play a crucial role in the story when Obi-Wan was forced to leave Tatooine. "[Ben] left Cody in charge of Luke. And that gave us a fun little B-story to keep cutting away to. He’s a really fun character and a guy racing against the clock obviously, because he’s ageing twice as fast. He’s trying to atone for the worst thing he’s ever done in his life."

Ultimately, there was no sign of Cody in Obi-Wan Kenobi. We did, however, get a reference to the impact the Clones had on the Jedi Master's life when he stumbled across one of them on the streets begging for change. Morrison reprised the role (which he shot while working on The Book of Boba Fett), so something tells us he'd have been open to playing Cody.

The prevailing theory is that the actor will suit up as Captain Rex in Ahsoka, of course, but there's always a chance we see Cody if and when Lucasfilm decides to move forward with an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2.
