Those of you who have watched The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels will no doubt be all too familiar with the legendary Darksaber, a weapon created thousands of years ago by the first Mandalorian Jedi. After spending hundreds of years in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, it would eventually find its way into the hands of Sabine Wren and then Mandalore ruler Bo-Katan.
We don't know how it happened, but by the time The Mandalorian took place, it had fallen into the hands of the villainous Moff Gideon. The blade will play a key role in season two of the Disney+ series, and actor Giancarlo Esposito has promised Darksaber scenes that are "really going to excite" fans.
As for how his lightsaber wielding skills are getting on, he added: "I’m decent. I’m getting better. But you have to respect the power of it, the energy of it. It’s long, dude. I’ve bopped myself three times already. Pop in the head, I’m like oh my God, what do I do? I start laughing. People look at me, they want me to be the expert right off the bat, because I’m the bad ass."
"But you know, it takes practice," he added. "So we have long ones, we have short ones. Because sometimes they have to put it in. And guess what? I can say this? I can say it, I can say it. I’m going through it in my head, spoilers, blah blah blah. I can say it. I’ve broken three of those bad boys."
Clearly, Gideon is going to see plenty of action in season two of The Mandalorian, and following the news that Rosario Dawson will be taking on the role of Ashoka Tano, it feels like a guarantee that we'll see a classic lightsaber duel. If not, we can probably still expect to see the Mandalorian himself having to deflect some attacks from the warlord as he unleashes the power of the Darksaber.
The show is currently expected to return to Disney+ this fall, but we have no idea whether COVID-19 will have any sort of impact on that (it seems pretty much inevitable at this stage).
Are you guys excited to see more of the Darksaber in The Mandalorian?
