A letter from Sony to Disney/Marvel Studios in regards to the Venom spin-off

With Sony about to release Spider-Man: Homecoming, they are ready to walk on their own two legs now that Disney/Marvel has done all the work for them.

Dearest Disney,

We here at Sony wish to extend our deepest gratitude in saving our asses and making our biggest movie of the last few years in Spider-Man: Homecoming by going behind your back and shitting on this partnership.

You may have noticed that we announced we will be making our very own rated R anti-hero movie (just like Fox, a rival company) with the most popular Spider-Man villain ever, Venom. We don't have any clue as to how we will pull this off but we feel rushing into it by announcing a release date before any kind of production staff or actors are hired or a script is  written is the best course of action for us.

When you look at the success of Twentieth Century Fox's Deadpool and Logan movies, it becomes clear that an R rating automatically makes a quality movie (if you ignore the facts that it took nearly a decade to make Deadpool and nearly two decades to make a quality Wolverine movie.) So Venom will be rated [frick]ing R.

Additionally, we will be going with a very low budget, and it has nothing to do with the fact that we are broke as [frick] and so desperate to make money that we lent our biggest intellectual property in Spider-Man out to you last year. No, we will be going with a low budget because thats what Deadpool and Logan did and look how that turned out!

Lastly, this Venom movie will not be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the biggest most successful franchise of all time. Now that you made one movie for us, we should be able to hold our head above water for at least a couple years, or until this Venom movie is released and blows donkey balls because it has nothing to so with Spider-Man and ignores 30+ years of comic book canon by excluding him and the rest of the Marvel Universe from it.

Oh and we're also making a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie because we here at Sony specialize in shit ideas. Once again, thank you for doing all the work for us on Spider-Man: Homecoming, but [frick] off, we're doing Venom and there isn't a damn thing you or any of the fans we rely on to make money can do about it.

Yours truly,

Sony.

1. This doesn't mean Venom won't appear next to Spider-Man at some point. There are multiple versions.

2. Disney/Marvel probably approved/knew about it, given their partnership. Sony still wants MCU characters in their films, after all.

3. Fall is still 5-6 months away. Plenty of time to get a script out and start getting the right people involved.

4. The MCU actually isn't the biggest, nor the most successful franchise of all time. Not yet, anyway. Probably will be soon, though.

5. If this somehow happens to become a decent flick, why complain?

@Philip -

1. So we can expect Fox-level continuity issues while the rest of the MCU is the gold standard for comtinuity in cbm's? Great...

2. Marvel doesn't have to approve shit, they don't own Spider-Man or any of the associated characters. And of course they still want MCU characters, but who amongst them would make sense to put in a Venom movie more than SPIDER-MAN who they DO own? Is Sony just going to take and take from Disney?

3. Show me the last movie that was fasttracked within a year that turned out good. How's Gambit coming along btw?

4. Maybe you got me there. But the MCU is undeniably the biggest most expansive franchise ever, excluding James Bond, which the MCU will pass by in entries by 2020.

5. History. When you copy formulas of other studios and rush a project so it comes out in time for a trend to still be relevant, you get bad movies. IE dark and gritty, "realistic" cbm's with Fant4stic.

It COULD be good, but my question is why ruin a good thing they have going by [frick]ing up continuity? Peter gets the symbiote first. Period. He rejects it and thats why the alien hates him. Period. You literally can't have Venom without Spider-Man first. Otherwise you're just changing canon for the sake of whoring out a well known property for money. For someone as big of a fan as he claims to be, Avi Arad is sure out of touch with what makes sense story wise by pushing this Venom fillm.

@FictionFantom -

1. Not necessarily. The MCU could use the Flash Thompson Venom if they want Venom, and Sony the Eddie Brock version, or vice versa. There's also Lee Price and Mac Gargan.
Likewise, if Marvel or Sony doesn't want to use Holland's Spider-Man, there's ways to handle it.

2. They doesn't have to approve anything no, but since both studios gain from working together, it's unlikely Sony would go against Marvel and set up an entire cinematic universe based on characters associated with Spider-Man.

3. Of the top of my head: Iron Man. It happened pretty fast. Took about 2 years, and filming started without a finished script. And it's still better than most other MCU films.
Also, Deadpool was greenlit in September of 2014, came out in February 2016. That's less time than what Sony has to put out Venom.
Don't know what Fox or Gambit has to do with anything regarding this though.

5. The gritty or realistic tone was hardly the problem with F4ntastic. Trends disappear when they get watered down, as long as the finished product holds up, no one will mind Venom.

Also, just because Peter won't be in the film, doesn't mean that a(!) Peter never got the symbiote. Sony's little universe could easily just take place in another dimension. We saw two Quicksilvers in the same year. We'll soon see two Flashes. There can be more than one Spider-Man dimension.

@Philip - With their animated Spidey movie coming out they will have THREE seperate coninuities of Spider-Man characters. As a movie goer, that just seems unnecessary and frankly, greedy and lazy. As a comic book fan it outrages me that they go to all the trouble of appealing to fany by lending Spidey to the MCU only to turn around and put his most popular villain in a seperate universe. That'd be like if Marvel Studios made all the Avengers movies but without Captain America and still made Captain America movies but not in the MCU. Anyone who knows anything about how movies are made can see that this isn't a "creative" decision, its a "we're broke and need money so lets pump out as much as we can in the shortest period of time" decision.

And it just makes no sense why they would go to all the trouble of joining with Disney to share Spidey but then turn around and do their own thing, which up until now has done nothing for them besides generate poor reviews and nearly force them to sell their entire movie division. Why do you think Sony even lent out Spidey to begin with? Because Disney asked real nice? Because Sony cares about the fans? If you do you are seriously naive and have no idea how businesses are run.

@FictionFantom - Why three? The animated and the Venom continuity could be one and the same.
Marvel's currently running with three loosely connected universes, and there's probably going to be more coming, with the Inhumans, Cloak and Dagger, and the Runaways in production. Sony could essentially do the same thing.

Of course it's a move to get more money. And they lent him out because Marvel wanted him and Sony needs money. Also, Spider-Man and Bond are more or less the reason the studio's still running. They've never lost money on either. But as it were, their profits ain't enough anymore, which is why they hope that a MCU Spider-Man will generate more. If it doesn't, they'll have to get rid of their movie division.
But like I said, both sides benefit from the Spidey-deal, so they wouldn't do anything to hurt that arrangement, so if you think Sony did this behind Marvel's back, you're incredibly dense.

@Philip @FictionFantom - Problem is your stretching the character too thin for the audience, 'whats the point of watching this one we can watch the one next month'. Thats going to create a black lash on the profit of all the films. Us comic book fans cry when theres another reboot for Spider man can you imagine what the ordinary audience thinks?

Your right MCU could have Venom still, we don't know the full rules yet. But even if they had the rights why would they want to confuse their work over Sony's version. Yeah happened with Quicksilver but he was added to Days of Future Past at the last second when Marvel Studios already signed off AOU, Whedon said. Prob the reason they killed him off.

This is really disappointing that Venom is a film not in the MCU.........I'm really happy that peter is in highschool as we can get these films about him growing up in a world of heroes. The black suit/venom story would of worked well within that concept, dealing with anger and then the consequence of that. That could of been great.

Now the Venom film might be great itself defo with the idea of its a horror but it will always be missing something and at the end of the day might as well be called something else.

I would urge some of you to calm down and stop throwing shade at sony. sony built up spiderman not disney. im happy he is in the mcu and am looking forward to homecoming. but sony is sony lets see their vision before throwing pre-emptive hate at them.
FictionFantom
FictionFantom - 3/29/2017, 2:24 PM
@tonytony - Because Sony following their visionhas woeked out so well for them up until now right? That's why they lent out the bigest most bankable intellectual property to a rival studio, right? And also why they needed Marvel to hold their hand in making Homecoming?

My biggest question is why not have this in the MCU? They already have their own seperate universe with the Animated Spider-Man movie coming out. So Sony will have three seperate continuities of Spider-Man characters? WHY????

I would guess that Avi Arad and Friends believe that with the success of Spider-Man Homecoming and the sequels, they can bank on Venom being successful enough to once again start a franchise. And they probably think it will be so great that they won't need Marvel anymore, so they will just sever the deal and have Spidey back with them.

They problem is, they are wrong. Sam Raimy is the only reason the first trilogy had 2 decent movies. Once Sony stepped in and forced Sam to do things the Sony way, things went in the toilet immediately. And we don't even need to bring up their second attempt at a Spider-Man franchise.

Point is, this isn't going to work. There is a better chance of this entire thing flopping hard and sending Sony's film division into bankruptcy and Disney will just buy the rights back at a yardsale. These people are morons.
