EDITORIAL: Should We Be Worried About The Success Venom Is Getting?

Venom has been getting mixed reviews across the board. Some people thought it was dumb, harmless fun. Others just thought it was dumb. However, it's the box office that tells a different story.

We Are Venom. And the rest of us are worried. At least, that's what some fans have felt concerning the success Venom has been receiving. If you haven't been keeping up with the news, Venom is killing it in the box office. China is apparently eating this film up like candy, while Venom has also surpassed Justice League at the worldwide box office. Currently at the 670+ million range, it's easily safe to say Spidey's big bad is a hit.

So, where does the worry come in? Well, it's Spider-Man himself. When Marvel and Sony made the agreement that Spider-Man could enter the MCU, it was reportedly supposed to be a six picture deal. As of now, we've had the webhead star in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Avengers: Infinity War. Up next will be Avengers 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and supposedly a third solo film, whenever that happens. So after that third solo film (I'm hoping it'll be called Spider-Man: Homestretch), the contract will be finished. Of course, Marvel and Sony could always renew the contract for more appearances.

However, if Venom keeps making it rain, what if Sony wants to take their precious Spidey back? Maybe so they could have him feature in a future Venom movie. It seems diabolical, but very possible. At the end of the day, Sony owns his movie rights and possess complete control. Still, even with Venom's box office success, it's more likely than not there's nothing to worry about.

Think about it this way. If Sony has a home run with Venom, then it's possible they may not even need Spider-Man back. If Venom has proven results, then they may want to run with that character instead. Sequels are already lined up for the head-chomping anti-hero, so why bother ruin what's already settled in the MCU? Tom Holland's Spider-Man is obviously a huge success on his own, meaning Sony would probably leave that alone and just focus on their other properties. Not only do they have Venom, but Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. If that becomes a hit, it will be even more of a reason for Sony to be satisfied with what they have.

Let's not forget Sony also plans to make movies revolving around Morbius, Black Cat, and even Kraven the Hunter. Whether any of those films actually come out remains to be seen. Point being, is that Sony has plenty of toys to play with.

Overall, no one knows what the future will bring. For all we know, Venom may even exist in the MCU down the line. One thing is for sure, I have to give credit for the odds Venom defied. Anything that brings a good name to the comic book movie genre is welcomed, and Venom seems to be doing just that.

Disney should trade some of its Fox IPs to get the rights to Spiderman back.

Nah, Sony knows that Spider-Man makes enough cash for them in the MCU. Venom and the rest are just them doing their own thing.

The bigger concern should be that such a mediocre movie earning this much success might lead to even more mediocrity.

Also, 6 MCU Spidey films. SIX. Once again, facts are important. Not five films, SIX. Remember folks, you've got something between your ears- don't be a big fool, don't make up alternative facts, use your brain.
