VENOM Projected To Debut In North America With A Solid $7+ Million Thursday Night Opening

Venom debuted in North America yesterday evening and while we don't have the final figures just yet, the projections are in and it seems like negative reviews may not be enough to hold the symbiote back...

Venom is already taking a bite out of the box office as Deadline reports that it's looking at a Thursday night debut of around $7 million. Showtimes for the Marvel Comics adaptation started around 5pm and, in comparison, A Star Is Born is pulling in around $2 million - $3 million. However, that movie started playing at 7pm and the number doesn't include Tuesday and Wednesday's early previews.

If these estimates are accurate, it means Venom is performing above Ant-Man ($6.4 million) and roughly on part with Thor: The Dark World ($7.1 million). However, it's currently behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $8.7 million. Analysts are currently torn as some believe that the movie will exceed expectations while others aren't sure if that 30% Rotten Tomatoes score will end up hurting it.

Should Venom exceed $8 million, it could end up scoring the best preview night ever in October beating Paranormal Activity 3 from 2011. As of right now, predictions for its opening weekend are all over the place but it is likely to do well. Whether or not it will have legs moving forward is hard to say, though, especially if moviegoers respond to it the same way as critics have. Stay tuned for updates.

So Venom sucks? Great...now the MCU won't touch the black suit story for another 5 years. Thanks Sony. Even when you're not in control of Spider-Man, you still manage to frick his series up.

@Nightwing1015 - hm. I'm gonna try to think of it as a blessing in disguise. Since Peter has only been spidey for so long in the MCU, I think this is a good thing.

I think having the character be deep into being spider-man helps venom and the black suit arc work better

@ftf530 - Fair enough. But Ultimate did the black suit early in his career and it worked out pretty well. But I can see the advantage of saving it.

@Nightwing1015 - good point. That first run of ultimate until ultimatum is so good but there's also so much that I forgot that. I was only thinking 616, but they've already used a lot more ultimate than 616, so you're right

None of this really surprises me. People wanna watch Venom for some reason. Can't explain why for the life of me.

Went and saw this last night. Was not the train wreck people were making it out to be. Yes it had issues but sets up for a sequel that I really want to see. It had some "ughs," and two "wait whats," but had enough enough that I enjoyed to hope for a solid sequel.

@Manmarvel - Thought the same thing! Could've been the incredibly low expectations I had for it given the reviews, but Tom Hardy's performance and the relationship between Eddie and Venom were enough to leave me feeling entertained.
Himura

@Manmarvel - I'm probably gonna watch it too. A lot of my friends thought it was pretty fun to watch and many comments on social media are saying the same. I think, yet again, the comicbook purists / fanboys are looking for excuses and reasons for it to be bad / do shitty. People are forgetting how to enjoy films nowadays instead of being so critical about every little detail.

@Nebula - also it was the heroes journey. It was the attention to detail. The whole thing of trying to save someone who may not be able to be saved. That last fight with raw emotion that built throughout the story. Absolutely stella. I want to play the story again and again.
Nebula

@Antoin - I already have. Plat'd it then played it through again twice. Insomniac are working on New Game + too.

It just all works and fits together so well, it's how I felt after seeing M:I - Fallout, zero complaints.

I'm torn. I don't think it's good enough to want it to do really well, but I wouldn't mind seeing Hardy return to the role in some capacity so I don't want it to flop.
MrMasculinity

@RorMachine - It’s not a perfect movie but it’s still pretty decent. I personally had fun watching it and was surprised based on the RT score. It’s not faithful to the comics but I really don’t feel like I wasted my money and will probably go a second time. Cineworld Unlimited helps though.

I have had a bad feeling about this film all through the production process. Especially since the release of the first pic of Venom. And nothing has really happened to alleviate those concerns. I suspect the Box Office figures will not be as strong as predictions. But we shall see come Monday.
