Naughty Dog's controversial video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, has officially become the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold since it went on sale last Friday, June 21.

There were concerns that recent plot leaks may negatively impact sales, but that clearly hasn't been the case. There has been quite a lot of backlash over one shocking story development, in particular, but it seems the majority of fans have been happy to purchase the game and see how things play out for themselves.

Neil Druckmann, Vice President of Naughty Dog and the game's director, shared the following message thanking fans for their support:

"We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways.

Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar."

Tell us, have you played through The Last of Us Part II yet? If so, what did you make of the game's more divisive elements? Please try to avoid going too far into spoiler territory in the comments.

That's odd. I saw salty means telling me that the game would be a financial failure, because it had "SJW pandering." How could such smart sounding people be wrong?

@FinnishDude -
I find it funny that homophobes keep calling it "propaganda" and "SJW pandering" when the game doesn't preach about gayness or have a gay message at all (at least as far as I'm into it). Ellie just so happens to have a love interest this time around and we have known she was gay since the first game. She's not some iconic decades-old longstanding character that they decided to turn gay.

In order for something to have an "agenda", there needs to actually be some sort of overly forced message. Anti-SJW snowflakes who cry every time a woman or minority does something outside of their little "box" should just admit that they don't like gay people. It's as simple as that.

@Darkknight2149 - as far as I can tell they're mainly mad that they killed off (SPOILER!) so early and then force you to play as the killer, who is also a woman.

apparently they viewed SPOILER as some kind of heroic figure despite all the sh*t that transpires in the first game that makes it crystal clear "you're not a good guy in this".

Haven't played the game myself (Can't even bring myself to finish the first game, even though it pisses me off that I can't) But i've seen plenty of gameplay and the story and it doesn't seem that bad. Like not TROS bad like I see some people saying.

Honestly I'm just glad people got to have a continuation, and a well made game overall even if the story isn't what some people hoped for. My expectations were shattered and shat on cause I decided to get this instead..

An Absolute broken pile of crap, be happy you guys actually got a functional game.

@Mrcool210 - Gotta say, I was not expecting to finish reading this comment with you saying you bought a SpongeBob video game.

@DutchCipher - it is the switch version. That version of the game is beyond [frick]ing broken. The pc versions not in the clear though. That game is broken to the point people can beat it in under 3 minutes

I’m a little over fifteen hours in I think.

The game on a technical level is damn close to a masterpiece. When it comes to certain story choices...there’s some questionable stuff. It’s a deep exploration of revenge so far at the very least, I’ll give it that.

The guitar is mad fun haha
