THE LAST OF US Season 2 Has Reportedly Found Its Abby Anderson In Kaitlyn Dever

It seems HBO has found its Abby Anderson, as a reliable source is reporting that Kaitlyn Dever has landed the role of Ellie's nemesis in the second season of The Last of Us...

The Last of Us season 2 may have found its Abby!

Despite a recent rumor that Black Widow star Florence Pugh was in the mix for what will be a huge part in the second season of HBO's adaptation of the best-selling survival horror/sci-fi video game, we're now hearing that another actress has officially entered talks, and this is one casting choice that's sure to stir up a lot of conversation!

According to Jeff Sneider, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, No One Will Save You) is executive producer/co-showrunner Craig Mazin and game creator Neil Druckmann's pick to play Abby in season 2 of the critically-acclaimed series.

Spoilers for the games and (potentially) the second season of the show follow.

In the game, Abby Anderson is a formidable member of the WLF (Washington Liberation Front), who is obsessed with tracking down Joel (Pedro Pascal) for killing her father (the doctor that was preparing to operate on Ellie in the season finale). The controversial character winds up becoming the game's secondary protagonist (or its primary antagonist, depending on your perspective).

Abby succeeds in gaining her revenge in the most brutal way possible, but it sets her on a collision course with Ellie, which takes both characters to some very dark places over the course of the game. In the end, the two engage in a vicious battle to the death.

Abby is tall, jacked and imposing (one character describes her as being "built like an ox"), so while Dever could obviously bulk up to some extent, the actress' slight frame and height (5 '2) would seem to suggest that they are going in a very different direction with this take on the character.

Funnily enough, Dever actually auditioned to play Ellie in season 1 before Bella Ramsey landed the gig.

Check out a recent poster, which is inspired by a key moment from the second game, below.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

How would you feel about Kaitlyn Dever taking on the role of Abby in season 2 of The Last of Us? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

@Ryguy88 -

No way he's dying anytime soon. He'll be around for at least two more seasons. They'd be crazy to kill him off that soon after all the accolades from the first season. This will be a "reimagining" and then stretched out to keep Pedro around for as long as possible.

@Humperdink - Yeah just from an emotional stand point the general audience that didn't play the game will have more of an emotional connection the longer he is alive. Also the show runners have already said they have alot of room to work with before the second game.

@Humperdink - honestly season 2 might not even adapt the second game, they might do the right thing and make people like and sympathize with Abby for a season or two before having he kill him

@HashTagSwagg - with L&T I think the approach made sense, as they needed CGI to either buff up Portman or slim her down. Sick Jane simply couldn't be the same as Thor Jane.

As for the show, I kinda don't even wanna see a buff Abby. Just makes no sense than someone can get buff in a post apocalyptic world.

They're obviously going with a take on Abby that's more similar looking to Ellie. I might be sceptical, but Dever is such a great actress.

I played the first game right before the show and I absolutely loved both for the most part.

I knew there was a lot of controversy about the second game and a new character named Abbie but I mostly avoided all spoilers, even though I had already guessed.

I started the second game and immediately the tone felt off. Then as soon as what happens to Joel goes down pretty much just as I assumed, I tried to keep playing but I straight up didn't [frick]ing care.

I didn't keep playing much after so idk what her motivation was though I really don't care. I could see what they were trying to do with the story and it just didn't interest me as much as the story of Joel and Ellie surviving together despite the fallout of the first game. I fully expected their story to be sad and ultimately tragic, but I expected it to play out over multiple games... At the very least save losing Joel for the end of the second game... But to just drop Joel right when Joel and Ellies drama was starting to get more complicated just to force Abbie onto us.... Nah. That's not how you keep fans. That's not how you keep me, anyways.

So my hope is that the show is smart enough to not immediately do what they did to Joel and force Abbie down our throats again. I need more Joel and Ellie adventures, I don't care if they make up original stories and characters just for the show to give them more opportunities to have meaningful development before what happens happens.

@TheVandalore - Be careful sharing your opinion. People who have said pretty much exactly like you did were attacked online and in real life. Many people were labelled as "violent haters" and cancelled from social media. Some people even lost their jobs, like a this one girl who is now a youtuber and was hired afterwards by an Independent comic creator. Or another girl who had a small, like 300 subs, garden youtube channel where she talked about flowers and dirt. She talked about the sequel to her favorite game, Last of Us, and she was not social media savvy so was heavily effected by the hate that was directed her way. She even showed some of the death threats she received and she was doxxed. She was a young girl living with her mom in middle America and had to use the little money they had to buy a security system and cameras. She even had to contact the local police to let them know about the doxxing and threats. The hate towards others cause of simply saying they didn't like the game was palpable and intense and they hurt a lot of people.

WarMonkey - 11/16/2023, 6:15 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Ya I agree. I don't get the praise at all. I've seen just about every zombie movie or show made around the world. I would place this story and characters in the middle of the good and bad ones somewhere. To me it's more like the later seasons of Walking Dead after it wasn't great anymore and the writing went downhill. I was so bored watching it waiting for anything interesting to occur that would make the story actually worth telling.
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 11/16/2023, 11:34 AM
@WarMonkey - I watched about 7 or 8 seasons of Walking Dead and the first 3 seasons made Last of Us look like all filler episodes.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 11/16/2023, 1:13 PM
@slickrickdesigns - That's exactly how I felt about the show too, it was all filler. Which is so weird cause it just started and they never established a reason to continue watching or give us a character to root for or have a story beyond "sad dude is trying to get from A to B because he's sad". And that's just not a story worth telling imo.

bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 11:48 AM
She should've been Ellie in my opinion. She looks like Ellie, and has the acting chops for it imo.

Can easily still cast her, as there will most likely be a five year gap. Dever as Ellie and Florence Pugh as Abby could work really well I think.

I'm not excited for season 2. Last of Us is my favorite game of all time, and they kind of took away the zombies. The journey didn't seem as perilous, and I don't know, as great as the last episode was to me, it wasn't the gut punch from the game. In the game, I walked away devastated because I felt like Joel was the villain of the game after that. I feel like they tried to humanize him too much. And they were so heavy handed with the "you're a protector Joel" foreshadowing it got irritating

A few years ago, she would have been the perfect Ellie.

I like her from Justified and Booksmart.

I hope they make Abby a complex and likeable character instead of an unlikeable character like in the game.
