Midway will sell the Mortal Kombat franchise to avoid bankruptcy

Midway Games filed for bankruptcy protection, trying to implement a key employee "incentive plan", which among other things means that they´ll have to sell their biggest franchise.

Well this is more like an accountant kind of thing, or legal affair. But the bottom line is that Midway is trying to avoid bankruptcy, and at the same time they have the intention to pay to at least 29 important employees some kind of protection.

They have the goal to gather as much as $3,755,000 USD. The plan includes bonus payments tied to 3 especific milestones. The employees that qualify for the plan would receive a percentage of such milestones:

The first milestone involves the distribution of a new game, Midway’s “Wheelman” (apparently already accomplished). Bonus Amount: $497,500.

Milestone 2 and 3 involve the sale of Midway’s Mortal Kombat franchise assets. Bonus Amount: $1,292,500. and $1,965,000.

So now the question is, if Midway manages to survive their economic crisis, what will they do next, without Mortal kombat??

They would have to start over and give it all to a brand new, revolutionary franchise like the one MK was in the 90´s??

Another site seems to explain this better than I did:

And seems like the NYSE has dumped Midway from the stock exchange list since they couldn’t manage to keep the $1.00 per share for 30 consecutive days.. that is bad news if anyone was expecting a Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe part 2….. So yeah, it sucks.

yeah it does! man this is so sad. i mean they should have paid their debts but the fact that a indy company from like 20 years ago who made a fortune is bankrupt is sad. What happened to the American Dream?

this sounds completely dumb but i really just want to know about the movie rights lol if you've played one MK game, you've pretty much played them all. (STFU fanboys of the games. i know they are different but when you get down to it, it's the same game) don't get me wrong (i seem to be saying that alot these days) i love MK as a game. i just never got a great adaptation of it in movie form. ya know?

Surely a MK movie rebooth will come out of this... you know, maybe Midway should have asked for loaned money or made a partnerhip and relaunched a MK movie like a couple years ago...or something, well videogames are their stuff and now this comes out.. sad.

Like you say, where is the continuation of the dream?? in a movie it ends with a happy ending and then 10 years later they are facing bankruptcy?? WTF??!!

Aw man. Hopefully, MK will be REBOOTED or REMADE into a piece of ART. I heard they wanted to reboot MK, and then eventually go on making a reboot franchise movies.

Midway has had great games over the years and although MK is the most popular game they ever thought of, im sure they can think of something fresh... besides, all the newer MK games were crappy.

Wouldn´t it be cool to completely change the game play for MK, and make it a RPG or adventure-first person kind of game, instead of a Fight versus one?? just a thought..
