Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a new mobile game that allows fans to re-imagine some of Star Wars' most iconic rivalries. Appropriately titled Star Wars: Rivals, the new mobile game is a real-time competitive action shooter with gameplay rooted in cover-based PvP skirmishes. In the game, players will build a team to challenge opponents in combat arenas.

The description reads:

Dominate your opponents in this fast-paced PvP shooter as you challenge players cross-platform in real-time combat arenas. Avoid taking damage by strategically utilizing your surroundings, targeting and destroying your enemies with mobile-optimized controls. Swap your Heroes in-and-out during the heat of battle, instantly altering how the game is played.

As is the case with most free-to-play mobile games, there will be an assortment of Heroes to collect and choose from to build the ultimate team. Of course, some heroes will be rarer and more powerful than others, and therefore only unlockable as you advance through the Arena Leagues. Characters will span all timelines of the Star Wars franchise, and it seems you will be able to mix and match them for tactical advantage.

The roster seems fairly deep, with specific mention of Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, Poe Dameron, and Princess (General?) Leia. Characters will boast their iconic and weapons and special abilities - such as Han Solo's DL-44 pistol and Darth Vader's Force Choke - offering greater strategy when assembling your team. Additionally, teams formed of the same faction, like the Rebellion, Empire, First Order, and Underworld, will gain faction bonuses for increased damage, health regeneration, and more.

And, of course, Star Wars: Rivals will support guilds. Together with friends you can climb the Arena leaderboards and claim Credits, Data Tapes, and Reward Crates that unlock feautred Heroes and level up your characters.

Star Wars: Rivals is available for pre-registration on Google Play now, with those who download it receiving exclusive access to death trooper support units (Rogue One's black-armor clad elite Imperial forces). Meanwhile, those who download from the App Store will receive exclusive access to Rebel Special Forces (SpecForces) for a limited time when the game launches.

Ackbar fighting Tarkin was definitely my favorite moment in the Star Wars saga

@DarthGrizzly - They used to be fun but where the money is in video games now and where my enjoyment comes from no longer seems very compatible.

@TheUnworthyThor - I rarely pay more than 20$ for a game, and I game all the time.

steam sales, pre-owned, indie darlings: that's all I touch. and I see some great shit, stories that you would never imagine. video games [frick]ing rule. Only some mediocre games have all of those forced microtransactions. and shit mobile games like this. Most developers are better than that.

@DarthGrizzly - He is wrong but mobile games DO suck though.

@BloodyBed - So it’s just all the games I would potentially want to play that are now too geared towards multiplayer and full of extra costs.

@BloodyBed - The only time I buy games tbh, wouldnt really pay full price for a game I can one day get for cheaper. But, if its a game I really am looking forward to, then I'll buy it at full price for sure.

@nikgrid - I wont deny that, mobile games are just cash grabs. Like I'm pretty sure there are like a thousand different versions of clash of clans, and all it is is just tapping. Nothing else. The only decent mobile games are like the puzzle sort of ones, like the 1010! which is kind of fun for a bit. But like, I dont play them, so I dont really care for mobile games.

@TheUnworthyThor - I get what you mean. But there are still a LOAD of great games out there. Cuphead, Hollow Knights, Horizon Zero Dawn, the new battlefro..... oh wait nvm, Mario Odyssey, that breath of the wild game. But i get what you mean. Like the independant/original films these days, you gotta go through all the shit to find those gems. And luckily some of them do get marketed well which is a good thing.

@TheUnworthyThor - whatever games you like to play, there are plenty of them that aren't monetized like that.

@DarthGrizzly - Yeah, there are some games I will buy at full price if I just NEED it, but that actually hasn't happened for a few years now. Monster Hunter X I believe.

and this year.. I'll probably buy monster hunter world at full price.

right now I'm playing breath of the wild. Ocarina was my first ever game, and I feel like I'm in a dream, this is unreal. you playing anything cool??

@BloodyBed - nothing really new, don't really have the money as of now, but I really want hollow knight and cuphead. I'm a big fan of good platformers. Ive been trying to finish this game called ori and the blind forest. It's such a chilling and relaxing game, like I love it so much. But man I really want the switch for mario odyssey, and breath of the wild. How you finding the switch? Is it worth the money?

@DarthGrizzly - oh man, I love a good sidescroller. If you haven’t, check out the momodora games, they’re great.

I really want cuphead and hollow knight as well, I just haven’t been in the 2D mood. I have Ori on my wishlist, I’ll have to look at it again.

The switch is okay. The console itself is pretty neat, switching between the tv and handheld is seamless, and it feels great to be able to take my game to the toilet. Botw and odyssey both look at run great, so it has to have some decent power behind it, I haven’t actually looked at the specs.

It’s just.. there isn’t very many games. Looking at the list, the only ones I wanted were Zelda and Mario. They need new Metroid, Star Fox, smash, Mario party, a new kart, or a new killer IP. I feel like the purchase won’t be really worth it for another year or so. Mario and Zelda are amazing, but they aren’t worth a new console. Hell, after I finish them, this thing is going to get unplugged and collect dust until another good game comes out.
