When Rocksteady's new Suicide Squad game was announced as a Games As A Service (GaaS) title, there was nearly immediate outrage from fans.
Expectations were high for the follow-up to Rocksteady's fan-favorite Batman Arkham trilogy, and the announcement of a GaaS title was simply not what the audience assumed the studio had been working on after years of rumors and secrecy.
After delaying the game's release date and going quiet for several months, a new 20-minute gameplay trailer was published, as well as a trailer revealing that Task Force X's vintage uniforms will be a pre-order bonus for the title.
The game's fast-paced combat takes prominent place in the clip, which appears to indicate that the production team has moved away from making a bullet sponge title. The video also did not focus on any loot, leading enthusiasts to believe that the game is no longer a "looter shooter." It's unclear whether this aspect of the game will be addressed in a future video although there is a brief mention of a battle pass.
The video indicates that the Suicide Squad intends to destroy the Justice League by breaking into the Hall of Justice's armory and stealing a few important gadgets to even out the playing field, including some of Batman's grappling guns, Dr. Sivana's Speed Force Gauntlet, and more. It also looks like the Penguin will appear in this game, acting as an arms dealer who lets the player upgrade their equipment and gain additional power.
Is the narrative around the game beginning to turn? While some gamers are convinced that the title still has all the trappings of the worst that Games As A Service has to offer, more optimistic gamers are hopeful that Rocksteady is leaning more into the Action-RPG genre.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released on February 2, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will feature the final voice performance of Kevin Conroy as Batman.
