Tomb Raider Reboot In The Works For 2013!

Official word has gotten out that the Angelina Jolie-starrer Lara Croft, adapted from the heroine in the Tomb Raider video game, is the latest to get the ol' reboot, with new rightsholders targeting 2013! Check it out!

GK Films have issued the following press release, announcing yet another movie treatment for the heroine Lara Croft, in the video game-adapted Tomb Raider.

In a pre-emptive strike, GK Films has come on board to acquire the feature film rights to TOMB RAIDER and will reboot the successful action-adventure franchise aiming for a 2013 release for the first film.

Produced by Graham King and Tim Headington, the films will create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.

GK Films acquired the film rights from interactive entertainment company, Square Enix Ltd. In Dec 2010, Square Enix subsidiary, Crystal Dynamics, revealed a new game for TOMB RAIDER based around the origins of the Lara Croft story.

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the TOMB RAIDER phenomenon,” said King.

The original game was published in 1996 by the London based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. Today Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics), is part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix and the stage is set for this new chapter in TOMB RAIDER history.

A pop culture phenomenon, the original TOMB RAIDER games have sold over 35million game units worldwide and Lara Croft, along with Mario Brothers is the most recognized name in gaming history.

Starring Angelina Jolie, Paramount Pictures made two movies based on the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions in 2001 and 2003. They grossed a total of $432m at the worldwide box office.

Though maybe irrelevant, it was mentioned last month that the reboot would be "much darker" and serious than Jolie's two films - Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life . And it was also said that Tron: Legacy's Olivia Wilde was being suggested for the new lead, likely being ideal. What do you think?

@helacaster: If people want to see more "original films" go see them when they come out and make sure they are successful. We get a good amount of original films that have to struggle to break even these days since adaptations are more successful at times and sends that message to the studios. Plus it is Not a remake because it's another take on pre-existing material.

Not to mention that even "original" films draw influence from other works and adaptations of any kind have been existing since the beginning of cinema and hell even back when only plays existed.

I'd love for Rhona Mitra to be Lara Croft but they might want a younger unknown.

The way they explain this press release about the film doesn't sound like much justice. Matter of fact, they referenced Jolie's Tomb Raider like it was that good. Continuing the franchise as a reboot? Yawn. I hope they take the approach the new game will. An origin story of a young Lara Croft. And they should theme it like Indiana Jones.. Kinda like Uncharted, MINUS the film bullshit.
tomb raider lara croft

@Jeremiah: I think they only word it by talking about the Jolie films positively on solely on the grounds that those films are proof that the franchise is financially viable.

@Sweetre15 my point is that is all the movies that are being done now. that s all you hear is remake and reboot now. its pathetic. noone makes movies anymore because they think their story can make money, they do it cause they know a character can make money then throw a script at it. it WILL be errible like the others were. because there is no movie in lara croft.

Olivia Wilde would be great, but everyone seems to think she needs bigger tits. Gamma Arterton might be able to pull it off. Kate Beckinsale would be good but she may be a bit old if they're planning a new franchise. And Angelina Jolie is out since its a reboot. I still don't see why we can't get a good video game movie, just stick to the games plot instead of making up some melodramatic bullshit, get some decent actors and there you go! I think the only good video game movie out is Prince of Persia, and even that had a lot of flaws.

jaybear, Daniel Craig was already in the first Tomb Raider movie lol. No joke. Watch it again. He's Lara's love interest in it. And then Gerald Butler is Lara's love interest in the 2nd film. Tomb Raider makes male actors into huge stars lol.

From watching Chuck, I think Lauren Cohan would make a good Lara Croft. Rhona Mitra is also a good choice.

@Vital: i know dude.. that's why he's going to be perfect 'cause it would be like Angelina Jolie passing the mantle to Daniel Craig! i'd say WINNING!
