An Uncharted movie has been in the works for what feels like forever, with Mark Wahlberg eventually attached to star before Spider-Man: Far From Home's Tom Holland ultimately landed the role. That movie is expected to delve into Nathan Drake's origin story, even though the game's have already tackled both that and how Nate met his mentor, Sully.

As you might expect, there's a lot of disappointment surrounding the decision not to faithfully adapt the games, and there was a time when Uncharted voice actor Nolan North was someone fans wanted to see play Nate on the big screen.

That's obviously not going to happen now, but it turns out the Marvel's Avengers star doesn't feel the movie should be a direct adaptation anyway.

"If they were going to do a one to one type thing – which again, I don’t think is a very good idea for video games, because Uncharted is a movie and you’re the star of that game. You’re the star of that movie because you’re Nathan Drake, not me. It’s my voice, it’s my movements, but you’re Nathan Drake. You make the decisions to jump, run, fall off a cliff - like I do – whatever."

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how much inspiration Holland chooses to take from North's performance (he also provided motion-capture for the character), but he makes a good point about the projects - and versions of Nate - being two very separate entities.

What do you guys think?

Good thing the movie isn't a direct adaption!

@TheJustinHammer - I strongly disagree. Setting aside the quality of this prequel, which we have yet to see, directly adapting Uncharted is a terrible idea. Uncharted is essentially the Indiana Jones franchise of the video game world. It captures that feel and tells a pretty good story, but the thing that makes it great is that combination of cinematic storytelling and gameplay that makes you feel like you're living these incredible action sequences, doing the exploring, and solving the puzzles.

The movie world already has its own Indiana Jones franchise. It's the Indiana Jones franchise. A direct adaptation of an Uncharted game would be caught in the shadow of both the Indiana Jones films and the Uncharted videos games. For movie fans unacquainted with Uncharted, it'd likely feel like an uninspired modern knockoff of Indiana Jones that doesn't bring much new or special to the table (because the special thing the games brought was the gameplay). For fans of the games, even if it was done well, it'd feel underwhelming in comparison because we've already seen these stories and they're less engrossing when we are removed from the action. Those stories already exist in their best form so there isn't much point in directly adapting them for any other medium. That might be different if there wasn't anything similar to them in film, but obviously there is, so IMO it's much smarter to tell a story that expands from the games rather than retreading them.

Sony, can you just get Allan Ungar and let him make a web-series of his fan film from a year or so ago with Fillion's Nathan Drake, Stephen Lang's Sully and Mircea Monroe's Elena?

Why make a movie of this? The games are already interactive movies. Just make another game. Or better yet, go back and fix the mistakes they made in the final installment. Love the series, and the last game is a blast, but they dropped the ball on a few things because they were way too focused on the multiplayer stuff (which is loads of fun). First two were the best by far.
