While much of the main cast has been established for the upcoming ‘Warcraft’ film, the characters each actor/actress will be portraying is still largely a mystery. We’ve been told the film will focus on the early goings-on of Azeroth and will have a nice balance between both the humans and the orcs. Now, actor Ben Foster has given us our first name to go along with the story details (via IGN).

“The character in Warcraft that I play is named Medivh. He’s a mage, which is essentially a sorcerer,” Foster revealed. “He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle. What’s exciting about Duncan Jones’ take on this video game is that it shows both sides of the war. It shows both sides of a conflict, which is exciting to me. It’s not just a video game turned into a movie. It’s asking, hopefully, an important question of, where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?”

There you have it, Ben Foster will be playing the sorcerer, Medivh. How close his portrayal will play to the lore remains to be seen but Foster is a phenomenal actor that will undoubtedly bring something unique to the table.

They're still making this? Taking awhile for the ball to get rolling, eh? Is Raimi still attached to this? Either way, I'm not a WoW fan so this doesn't soak me panties wet but nonetheless, glad fans are finally getting news on it.

THE PROPHET FROM REIGN OF CHAOS!!!!

YESS!!!

I HATE World of Warcraft. The more they draw from THE REAL Warcraft, i.e. Warcraft 1, Warcraft: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos, the better!!

Help me out here, but is there a core story with characters in WOW? I thought it was basically just an open world game where you create a custom character and interact with each other.

There is a ton of lore, they have comics, novels, manga... all sorts of stuff that fleshes out the characters and the world. If u read the missions there are actually story lines in the game itself and each expansion plays off of the last.

They have already finished principle filming, they are now going to edit it and add cgi and all that over the next 2 years. Taking their sweet time in true Blizzard fashion.

Well at least they want to get it right (they're perfectionists). 2 years post-production is a bit of overkill, hope it's not for nothing.

actually it wasnt supposed to be 2 years. it was initially due at the end of next year close to Star wars ep7 but got pushed to march/apr of 2016. post prod will be done by sometime early next year and it will sit on the shelf for a year.

I hope this movie will be good. There isn't many fantasy films coming out soon. So I hope this movie can take the spot that the Hobbit will be leaving. I can easily see a few movies coming out from the Warcraft universe. I also would like this to do well so Starcraft can come out next.

I personally think once the movie industry finds out how to bring video game movies to the big screen and them being good the flood gates will open to many other great video game movies. Just look at the early days of comic book movies. Most in the early days weren't that great and look at what we get these days lots of great ones. Plus every so often the rotten egg ones. But the good outweighs the bad. So right now the bad outweigh the good on video game movies but soon I believe it will shift in the other direction.

This had a weirdly short shoot. Kind of looking forward to it.

I'm glad they're going back and covering earlier Warcraft history and lore instead of setting it sometime after Mists of Pandaria or something. Imagine when they get to the events of Reign of Chaos in the sequels! I have a good feeling this might actually be the first GOOD video game movie.

This film could be done in a similar tone to Lord of the Rings. I like the actor and i look forward to seeing him portray the character of a mage.

My common sense is tingling...

It's telling me that this movie is gong to fail miserably. Pity, as Ben Foster is a great actor, who could use a success.

I'm feeling the exact opposite, if Warcraft is done correctly it can easily fill the fantasy void left behind by the Hobbit films. Game of Thrones is also helping elevate the genre in the public eye as well. With a built in viewership of past and present players, the film is off to a good start. The only way I can see it failing is if its plain bad.

@Mercwithamouth blizzard are known for taking their time and being perfectionists. If they even had a hint that this would fail they would pull the plug.
Also if this movie was to flop, having a 12 million plus fan base helps make sure this won't be an utter box office disaster.

Hopefully if this video game movie works it will help pave the way for others such Mass Effect.
