We've known for quite a while now that Steve Trevor would return for Wonder Woman 1984 after being killed off in the first film, but how the sequel planned to go about achieving this miraculous resurrection has been a major topic of discussion ever since Chris Pine was confirmed to appear.
Would Diana make a deal with Hades to reunite her with her lost love? Maybe it'd have something to do with Max Lord, who is a powerful metahuman in the comics? Time travel? Alternate reality? Well, no.
This probably won't be considered a massive spoilers since many critics have already discussed it in their reviews, but basically a magic stone with the power to grant wishes just happens to find its way to Diana, and she wills Steve back into the world in the body of some random dude (Kristoffer Polaha).
Yep, that's it. It's silly, it's lazy, and as we said in our review, it's almost certainly going to end up being the most divisive aspect of the movie.
The wish-stone thing stops being such a glaring issue after a while (if you can get on board with it at all), but even then, it's difficult to fathom why Patty Jenkins and co. felt the need to go all Quantum Leap with Trevor's return and not simply reintroduce the character. After all, when Diana and Steve sleep together, she's actually... okay, we won't go there (Jenkins probably shouldn't have, either).
Wonder Woman 1984 is now playing in several locations, and will debut in US theaters and on HBO Max this Christmas Day.
